The NoVA Signal
What Northern Virginia is talking about before 9am
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Policy & Power
  • Dominion and NextEra are sweetening their merger pitch to skeptical Virginia leaders. The companies now promise a shareholder-funded co-headquarters tower in Richmond, 600 new jobs, and a $10 monthly residential bill credit stretched to four years from two. They'd fund most of it by ending credits that would have gone to large data center customers. FFXnow
  • Loudoun's board takes up two measures today that would rein in data centers. One would pause processing of all new applications while the county rewrites its zoning ordinances; the other would end by-right development of the warehouses. Supervisor Juli Briskman, running for board chair, is leading the push. WTOP
  • Fairfax City Council can now discipline its own. The council adopted an 18-point code of ethics on Sept. 8, allowing sanctions like formal censure or loss of seniority. The largely self-enforcing measure passed unanimously with little debate. FFXnow
  • Fairfax's school board is weighing whether to sell naming rights to high school athletic facilities. Board members directed staff to gather details from the business community while trying to set policy guardrails. Nobody has committed; officials warned against getting too corporate. FFXnow
๐Ÿš“ Safety & Weirdness
  • Manassas is pausing its monthly First Friday festival after a 16-year-old girl was fatally shot at the Sept. 4 event. Police estimated more than 10,000 people attended that night. The October block party is off while the city and downtown merchants reconsider the future of the series. WTOP
  • An Alexandria man threw bricks at a Green Valley home, then fled a traffic stop, Arlington police say. The Saturday night incident on S. Lowell Street damaged the occupied home of a woman he knows. Investigators identified the 32-year-old quickly and arrested him Sunday; he's held without bond. ARLnow
  • A large tree took down a utility pole in Arlington Ridge, cutting power to more than 3,000 customers. The Monday morning fall sparked a transformer fire and blocked S. Arlington Ridge Road. Two schools stayed open through the outage. ARLnow
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Money, Jobs & Development
  • Riptide Square neighbors want Loudoun to demolish the burned-out home of a convicted murderer and arsonist. Nearly a year after the fire that killed Madelaine Akers, two of three destroyed townhomes are gone; the arsonist's still stands behind a chain-link fence. Residents have launched a petition to the Board of Supervisors. WTOP
  • Tysons florist MyFlorist has opened a wine shop inside its longtime storefront. Tysons Corner Wine and Gourmet held its grand opening Monday, leaning on smaller producers and bottles from Portugal, Georgia, Greece, Turkey and Armenia. FFXnow
  • PSA Sports Club has quietly opened in Sterling as the Dulles Sportsplex closes its doors. The Ruritan Circle facility offers camps, clinics and turf for tournaments; a number of former Sportsplex employees now work there. The Burn
  • Kilwins has opened its first Loudoun ice cream and candy shop in downtown Leesburg. The King Street store is the first of two planned in the county; a second is under construction in Brambleton Town Center. The Burn
โšก Quick Hits
  • Loudoun's LIVWELL Organic Market in the Tollhouse Center went dark at the end of August. The Burn
  • Loudoun County earned the GFOA's excellence in financial reporting certificate for the 39th straight year. Loudoun County
  • Loudoun's Procurement Division closes for staff training the morning of Sept. 22. Loudoun County
  • Washington-Liberty's football team is 3-0 for the fourth straight year. ARLnow
  • NaLa Noches, a free Latin music series, returns to Met Park in National Landing starting Sept. 17. ARLnow
  • Oktoberfest season kicks off across NoVA on Sept. 18, from Falls Church to Arlington to Tysons. Arlington Magazine
  • Vint Hill in Fauquier County was once a top-secret WWII signals installation tied to D-Day. WTOP
๐Ÿงญ Regional Mood

Loudoun spends today deciding whether to stop building data centers while Dominion spends today explaining who pays for the ones already humming. Same current, two ends of the wire, and everyone knows their bill is somewhere in the middle.

That's the briefing. Look out for each other out there. See you tomorrow.
