Announcing My New Gong History Series
Greetings The Gong readers.
I have started a new column over at The Illawarra Flame where I will be writing about the cultural history of Wollongong through monuments, places, and public art. I hope you can join me on this journey through time and place. I’ve included the first paragraph below and you can read the rest for free on the Flame website.
The Illawarra Flame is doing a great job keeping local journalism alive in our region so why not subscribe to their newsletter and help them pay the bills?
What's behind this well-trodden plaque to peace?
Alexander Brown, The Illawarra Flame, 14 September 2026

Hidden in plain sight in the pedestrian mall at the corner of Crown and Church Streets in Wollongong lies a bronze plaque featuring an image of two hands fringed in laurels releasing the dove of peace. The plaque commemorates the 1986 United Nations International Year of Peace.
