Volume 1, Issue 8 | Starpower

Such a good week.

Malika, one of Livvy and my dearest friends, was in town and got to meet so many of y’all; we heard so many affirming stories at Glint; and we received a tremendously kind gift from a local historian—much more on that in the near future. (We also discovered another wasp nest this week! Which was not lovely, but was very useful to know about.)

Looking forward to the next one.

Happenings

This Week:

Moonlight Showcase, Monday, August 5

Moonlight members only (for now). This is where Moonlighters show off work from the last lunation and commit to projects for the next lunation. Interested in joining a social club for side projects based around the cycle of the moon? Reply to this email.

Game Night, Tuesday, August 6

Second of many, this game night is being run by our dear friend and Company member Justin Schaffer. He used to design and publish board games, now he just plays them. RSVPs are needed by Monday, August 5.

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday, August 7

The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time. $5, or free for Company and Moonlight members.

Work together →

Creative Coding Demo Day, Saturday August 10

Demo days are where people casually present creative coding projects at any stage of progress—or just watch people give demos. They are hosted by Norton King and the Denver Generative Art meetup group.

Future Weeks:

PowerPoint Party No. 17, Saturday, August 17

One of the major reasons we started The Company was to have more space for our overcrowded PowerPoint Parties, and the extra space has not yet filled up. So invite all your friends and family and that cute stranger you just met but have a good feeling about. And get yourself and them tickets.

We’ve currently not got spots for more presenters, but we reliably dip into the presenter waiting list so sign up for that if you’d like! Email us back or text me or Livvy if you’d like to sign up.

Nostalgia

Do you remember the workdays? The minute-by-minute ticking of the time clock, the Olympics on in the background, the impromptu breaks and walks and conversations? How even though it had been months, it still felt so nice to not work from home alone?

How so many of us practiced our Glint stories? Talked to ourselves in our cars or in the gym or on walks, and got strange looks? Norton speaking into the mic before the show to try to get used to the sound of his own voice?

Glint itself? How we shared deep and vulnerable and beautiful things? How we got to meet new people, too? Víctor and Carolyn and Claire and Erik and Brookstar and Paul and Madison? How we lingered, and talked about midding while Malika played receptionist?

How at worknight, after drawing so many diagrams, Livvy figured out how to have us all hold hands and make a 7-pointed star? How we did a cheer at the end and were told to chant worknight? How Halie scolded Norton, thinking he said something else, and how he called her a dork?

How we found another wasp nest, alerted Kent, and he gifted Livvy cinnamon to blow into our space? How after that moment we were ever prosperous?

The arrival of our temporary time card holders?

How Norton and Halie and Malika and her coworker spent all Saturday working against deadlines?

Bureaucratic Minutiae

  • The timecard system is slowly improving. There’s now a holder tidily holding cards, perched on the table. We also now have proper accounting set up, we think. We can now see exactly how far from our goal we are, which is helpful.

  • At Worknight: Malika made some colored dots, Livvy linked the Company bank account to Quickbooks, Halie completed the section between red lines, Drew brainstormed, Ivan discussed anniversary plans with Livvy, Jacob edited audio, and Norton started a CMS for the Norton J. King art collection. Also we figured out how to make STARS out of PEOPLE.

  • At Glint we heard stories about Muay Thai, deception, changing who you are, visiting a new friend, getting asked to banquet, a near-death ski accident, Muay Thai (again!), basketball, moving to Costa Rica, and the journey to saying ‘yes’ to telling a story at Glint.

  • Finally, a reminder that The Company is a membership-supported mixed-use creative space, and if you know any of us, you’re welcome to pop in any time for free (outside of events). If you know that one of us is here and you’d like to come by, reach out and we can let you in.

Do you know anyone in the Denver area who might be looking for creative community? Feel free to forward this email along to them. Everyone loves Paperwork.

This issue of Paperwork was made possible by the support of our members, Halie, Drew, Justin, Mason, Lexi, José, Mary Ann, Trevr, and Aubrey.

An electronic typewriter.
Norton briefly brought out a new creative tool before realizing he had to focus on other things.

Justin looking happy about watching the olympics.
One might get the impression—

A number of numbers.
The process of developing our visual identity has been long and organic. One thing we realized early on is that hand-done elements mixed with machine precision feels kind of right.

A number 2 on a flier filled with abstract shapes.
So on our custom event fliers we’ve been mixing those.

A whiteboard filling up with names.
At Glint, all tellers know they’re going to tell. What they don’t know is the order, which is randomly determined. Photo by Drew.

A group of people.
People meeting people.

Justin telling a story.
Justin was there for the story.

Allyson telling a story.
Allyson reminded us all of a woman we have never met.

The audience at Glint.
Some of the crowd.

Mary Ann Tate telling a story.
In Mary Ann Tate’s first of many Glint appearances she told a story about death and life and birth.

Topaz telling a story.
Topaz wanted to see sloths. She eventually got to see a lot more.

Carmen telling a story.
A luck of the draw led to Carmen ending the night with a sweet story of saying yes to telling a story at Glint.

Madison smiling after punching out.
Look at how happy it makes people to punch in and out! This is definitely not at all a tedious thing.

Halie rhinestoning her Taylor Swift costume.
One of the first thing we learned about Halie was that she loved Taylor Swift and was going to make a costume to wear the next time she went to her concert. That next time is very soon.

Livvy diagraming hand-holding positions.
You might remember from last week that we do this thing at worknights where we try to earn stars. Sometimes there is a reward for achieving five stars. The reward this time was going to be that we were going to try to make a star shape by holding hands which it turns out is not easy.

A group of five people holding hands in an unexpected way.
We started with your standard regulation five pointed star, but this method carries over into any other number of points. Not pictured (because the picture taker’s hands were full), the seven pointed star.

Justin looking at a TV.
—that Justin doesn’t work that hard.

Livvy admiring the new time card holder.
If you were one of the people who experienced the chaos of sifting through a couple dozen cards to find your time card upon entry and exit, it is now not as chaotic.
