Volume 1, Issue 40 | Paperfolk

On Sunday morning, after weeks away, I returned to dear friends, an unrecognizably tidy space, search results for “coup d’état” on my screen, and Paperwork mostly completed. I’m stepping in here at the very last minute to just write this paragraph and hit send. Haven’t even read the issue yet. But before sending I want to say thank you to everyone who helped out these last two weeks! And especially to Dan and Michelle for writing this and the last few issues, and for running everything else while Norton, Livvy and I were out. I’m so happy to be back, and I also look forward to continuing to have their help.

Happenings

This week:

Glint: Secrets, Tuesday, March 18

True, personal stories, told live, without notes. Pretty much exactly like The Moth except without the competition, on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, and everyone knows each other (or is about to). Our next theme is “Secrets“, and we’ve got a few storyteller slots left.

Do you have a story of privacy, espionage, an unknowable thing? A secret kept, or shared, or expired? Whatever your interpretation, we want to hear it.

$10, or free for tellers and members.

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday, March 19

The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time.

$5, or free for Company and Moonlight members.

Future weeks:

In the Making, Tuesday, March 25

Our newest recurring event!

Directly inspired by the lovely yet infrequent Make & Tell events hosted by The Made Shop—whence Justin and Michelle and Ashley and were discovered, and Mike and Elaine (and Caleigh!) discovered us—we are hosting a similar but different event:

In the Making is a showcase of original, amateur, creative works in progress. Our first one was so lovely, and we’re looking forward to this being a new regular rhythm. Are you interested in sharing about a passion project, and what you’ve been learning through it? We’ve got one spot left. Are you interested in just attending and learning about people’s creative work? We’ve got roughly forty spots left.

$10, or free for members and presenters.

Mary Ann’s Book Club: The Other Significant Others, Monday, March 31

A book club switching between fiction and non-fiction. This month’s book is The Other Significant Others: Reimagining Life with Friendship at the Center, by Rhaina Cohen.

Snacks and drinks will be provided to fuel our conversation.

$0–$10

Talk to your friends about friendship →

Also coming up: Survival Scouts (April 1), PowerPoint Party No. 25 (April 5).

Nostalgia

Do you remember the smaller yoga class? How we stuck around just to talk about spring? The lulling and calming sound of motorbikes blasting up 15th during supine twist?

Do you remember the bartaco lunch after yoga? When we all talked about all the crushes we had?

Justin’s new personal business idea, Mandate, where he goes on man dates and gives them mandates about their behavior? How Mason used the shower while we learned how to make gifs?

Do you remember the second sleepy week? How Mami had to leave for a few days but she promised she was coming right back? How the effigies continued to travel around the room? How every time they were in the way we softly moved them, as if we were moving tiny versions of Ivan and Livvy?

The first Severance watch party in the sun? How it was so hard to come in and watch because the weather was so lovely? How Jim and Katie ran to Little Man to get some ice cream beforehand? The frozen can explosion during intermission?

How about game night? Chris’ documented love for dice rolling? How Jessica came from behind to win it all and became the ruler of Catan?

Do you remember the Weekly Wednesday Worknight? Brien’s first star ceremony? The birth of the Company Cleanup Initiative? Dan making a large mess to clean the larger mess? The applause? The fame? The glory?! The two vacuums? How he was never supposed to see the other vacuum?

Do you remember the banana pudding taste test? The frat boys across the street with a “YOU HONK WE DRINK” sign? How the call and response of St Patrick’s Day honking and cheering started off annoying and then eventually became funny and charming?

Do you remember Jim and Dan’s St Patrick’s Saturday Night Jamboree? The hardware store / pet supply shop? The kids helmet at REI? The very unique way of affixing acoustic panels? Addressing the perilously wired EXIT sign? The incredible “once a year” burger?

Do you remember Ivan and Livvy’s return? How finally, all of our Find My’s said “Denver, Colorado, 25m?”

People evaluating a soda explosion.
Turns out when the fridge is set to ❄️, cans in the top shelf can in fact explode. Sometimes this happens during an intense theory session after an episode of Severance.

Weekly Wednesday Worknight was a rousing success.
