Volume 1, Issue 3 | Cards

Howdy!

This past week held three milestones for us: air conditioning, a storytelling, and cards. We’re quite chuffed.

(We’re also quite chuffed that you’ll probably have to google what chuffed means. It’s a great word. You really should use it more often.)

Thanks to everyone who came by and made it a good time. Hope to see you again soon and often.

Happenings

This week:

Break Room, Monday July 1

We continue to figure out our rhythms here, but at least a few nights a week, Management is here late. If you’d like to stop by to socialize, see the space, read a book, play a game of chess, or just generally hang out in an unstructured way for absolutely free, feel free to pop in anytime between 5–9 this Monday. No link, no ticketing, just show up and we’ll keep each other company.

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday July 3

The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time. $5, free for Company and Moonlight members. Learn more at the link.

Next week:

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday July 10

Same as above, but again. More at the link.

Game Night, Thursday July 11

The first of many, this game night is being run by our dear friend and Company member Justin Schaffer. He used to design and publish board games, now he just plays them. RSVPs are needed by July 9. Learn more at the link.

Save the Date:

We’re planning a marbling workshop for Monday, July 15. More details to come.

Nostalgia

Do you remember how we had Jeremy design and 3D print us a piece to modify our second air conditioner bracket, before learning that it wouldn’t work, and we had to resort to far less sophisticated blocks of wood? How Drew stayed forever to help us get it installed, hanging out on the ladder while Norton mumbled curses? How River greeted all the other dogs passing by? How after we finally finished, Norton said “Surely now we can coast”?

Or how we worked on so many projects that week—how Drew and I set up lights, Livvy spent hours refining and rehearsing her story, and Norton coded a custom generator for the logo font?

The very first Glint, with stories of origins, gestures, and meet cutes? How we had a mic and a spotlight, how Will spun on stage, how Justin used a prop? How we all met Lee? Felt so filled up and grateful?

How we played more chess, this time using the chessboard?

How we finally installed the new printer ink but it refused to work, so we had to set up Penelope? How she happily and perfectly drew all those intricate patterns for the cards we wanted to hand out at Creative Mornings? How we almost forgot them when we were leaving for the night? How we handed out just two—one to Lizzie and another to Beth?

Bureaucratic Minutiae

  • We updated our Instagram handle; it now makes more sense and also matches our url.

  • We changed most of the lightbulbs so that they have matching color temperatures. Everyone who was deeply upset by the lighting (which was mostly me) can now relax. It’s much nicer now. We also have some paper lamps for that nice diffused side lighting.

  • Finally, a reminder that The Company is a membership-supported mixed-use creative space, and if you know any of us, you’re welcome to pop in any time for free (outside of events). If you know that one of us is here and you’d like to come by, reach out and we can let you in.

Do you know anyone in the Denver area who might be looking for creative community? Feel free to forward this email along to them. Everyone loves Paperwork.

Code and graphics on a screen.
The amount of time and code that Norton has been putting into our branding is staggering. Here he’s demoing the logo generator.

Letters on a screen.
I spent some time working on more letter shapes. We’ll probably be wrapped up with this by May of next year.

An image of a phone filming a pen plotter.
Making a time-lapse of Penelope at work.

An absurdly handsome man changes a lightbulb while standing on a table.
We discovered that the ceiling is slightly higher at one end of the room when the ladder that had been working fine suddenly wasn’t anymore.

A print of company logos.
When you cut things out based on cutting marks, you also end up cutting off the cutting marks. This is puzzle we’ve not fully solved.

Two people thinking real hard about a chess game.
Lexi and I played a satisfying amount of chess this week.
