Volume 1, Issue 23 | Playlist

This last week wrapped up The Company’s second quarter in operation. Our lease is now halfway through. We’ve grown so much, learned so much, had so much fun, and continue to be so grateful to try out this experiment in community with all of you.

And it feels especially nice that we got to end Q2 with Homecoming, which was the loveliest time. Thanks to Halie and Lizzie’s efforts, and so many other people’s help, we had a blast.

If you were there, thanks so much for coming out! If you weren’t, we missed you! And wherever you were, we look forward to seeing you at Prom sometime this spring.

Happenings

This week:

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday, November 20

The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time. $5, or free for Company and Moonlight members.

Next Week:

Mary Ann’s Book Club: Of Boys and Men, Monday, November 25

Richard Reeves claims that the modern male is struggling. We may have personally witnessed these moments, we may be experiencing this crisis ourselves, or we may want to understand how modern society has affected male identity. We’ll chat about these themes of post-feminist masculinity in an hour-long deep dive.

Come to book club, man →

Glint: Heights, Tuesday, November 26

True, personal stories, told live, without notes. Pretty much exactly like The Moth except without the competition, on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, and everyone knows each other (or is about to). Our next theme is “Heights“, and we’ve got a few storyteller slots left.

Do you have a story of being at altitude? Of a peak in your life? Feeling elated? Euphoric? Being high? High stakes? A climbing trip? Measurements? Vantage points? Whatever your interpretation, we want to hear it.

Also coming up: PowerPoint Party No. 21, Yoga with Dan

Nostalgia

Do you remember that week bookended by bartaco, our newfound late-night savior? How we ran into Wes and Kevin on our way out?

How Yoga with Dan was filled with so many friends?

That Justin finally came back?

The Tuesday lunch? How we met at Pita Central and walked back? The small game night? The lunch with Jim and Jaime—how we talked about so much?

The workdays and worknight, the meeting about Q2?

How we had so much fun setting up for Homecoming? The sound of the balloons popping, the music, all the furniture moving around—how excited we were to see the glimpses of it coming together?

That Homecoming was, in fact, the loveliest time?

Do you remember the old black and white movies playing in the background, the spotlights, the balloon arch, the string lights, the hanging stars, the colorful shadows? How novel it was to see all of us so dressed up for the first time?

Do you remember that it was then that you said “I love you” to each other?

How when September played, Allyson and Eloisa screamed and ran to each other? That Desi did the splits? That it was getting hot in here, so we opened windows and stepped outside to cool down?

How Homecoming Royalty was announced, and we were honestly surprised? How it was just the two of us, slow dancing together, and then it was everyone?

Bureaucratic Minutiae

  • The bathroom light switch broke and promptly got fixed (thanks, Jim!).

  • We took out some of the ACs, meaning there’s slightly more natural light.

  • We had a beautiful but awkwardly large coffee table in our space, and we moved it into storage (thanks, Kent!).

  • At Yoga with Dan, people did yoga! I was not eavesdropping enough this time to be able to add more detail to it, but from what I’ve seen the reviews continue to be very positive.

  • At Worknight: Livvy replied to three emails, Will worked on his website maker, Jacob rendered excel sheet data, Ben turned a button into a menu, Dan finished key visuals for Yerba Mate, and Ivan thought a lot about patches.

  • At Homecoming: We voted, we sang, we watched black and white movies on silent, we danced, we took photos, we had shouting conversations, we stepped outside for a breather, we had a very good time.

  • Thanks to Halie and Lizzie and Mikayla and Justin and Dan and Lexi and Allyson and Michelle and Mark for helping with setting up.

  • Finally, a reminder that The Company is a membership-supported mixed-use creative space, and if you know any of us, you’re welcome to pop in any time for free (outside of events). If you know that one of us is here and you’d like to come by, reach out and we can let you in.

Do you know anyone in the Denver area who might be looking for creative community? Feel free to forward this email along to them. Everyone loves Paperwork.

This issue of Paperwork was made possible by the support of our members, Halie, Drew, Justin, Mason, Lexi, José, Mary Ann, Trevr, Aubrey, Allyson, Madison, Melissa, Elijah, Dan, Michelle, Jim, Jaime, Jacob, Mark, and our newest member, Ben.

A group of people standing around outside.
We learned last week that bartaco is open till midnight, and meant to highlight that in Paperwork because that is a huge quality of life improvement for quite a few of us.
A group of people around a table.
Justin finally got back from being away and we got back to our occasionally overlapping lunch schedules
Jim fixing a light switch.
Jim, one of our newer members, has been coming in tremendously handy(-person). We accidentally broke off the pull chain and the next day he fixed it.
A group of people standing around a screen.
Worknight had a few of us looking at Ben (newest member)’s screen while he explained what he was working on.
Michelle and Justin hugging speakers.
While trying to decide about our subwoofer needs, Michelle and Justin hugged our speakers to see how much the low-end on these speakers could make them wobble. It was none.
Mark setting down a case of flowers.
Mark, another new member, brought a bunch of flowers from a closing party he was at, and gifted them to Homecoming decorating.
Halie standing on a table hanging up stars.
The night before Homecoming a group of us worked on setting up, and it was so much fun. New learning: setting up to music is much more fun than setting up to silence.
Livvy and Lizzie tying balloons together.
The morning before Homecoming we continued to set up. Livvy helping Lizzie with balloons for the balloon arch.
Halie pinning a boutonniere on Ivan.
Dan kindly bought Livvy a boutonniere to give to me which Halie pinned on while Justin shone a flashlight while Dan took this picture (Livvy gave it her best but had to rush off to help with tickets).
Paul prepping for a photo.

Halie and Justin dancing together.
Season 3, baby.
John leaving the building.
John and Marcia (our next-door neighbors and landlords) popped in to check out the space and pay us some really nice compliments. We also invited Kent (our downstairs neighbor and proprietor of Kent Flora Art & Photography Gallery) but he was away.
A dance floor.
Mark looking like the emoji of a dancer.
People voting for homecoming royalty.
Voting for Homecoming royalty.
Again, a dance floor.
Being new to this, it’s cool how there are moments and songs where everybody comes back to the dance floor.
Drew and Hope taking a photo.
Drew and Hope at the balloon arch.
Justin and Dan talking music.
A lot of us added songs to the Homecoming playlist, and Dan took on the task of organizing the playlist for a cohesive flow. Justin (a DJ in one of his many past lives) contributed some thinking and late-game additions.
Lizzie and Halie making some remarks.
Halie and Lizzie, organizers of Homecoming, giving some remarks and announcing the Homecoming Royalty.
Ivan and Livvy dancing.
Which was Livvy and me! Photo by Lizzie.
Desi and Allyson dancing.
Desi and Allyson having the best time.
