Volume 1, Issue 19 | Ramps

One of the trees outside is turning red. The lines at Little Man no longer wrap around the block. Everyone’s wearing great sweaters. It’s a lovely time of year.

If you’re looking for cozy things to do with other people, looking to explore the great indoors, or just looking for a place with brand new curb ramps right outside, we’ve got you covered.

Happenings

This week:

Colorado New Media Arts Meetup, Monday, October 21

Ashton—a composer, sound designer, and member of the creative coding network that Norton’s a part of—is hosting a new meetup at The Company for creators and enjoyers of new media arts.

Some examples of new media art include: Digital Art, Generative Art, Video Synthesis, Glitch Art, Projection Mapping, Art Installations, VR and AR, Interactive Art, Video Art, Internet Art, Sound Art and Modular Synthesis.

If you create or enjoy art with non-traditional tools and methods, and want to meet other people who do, we welcome you to join the first gathering of this new group.

Glint: Ghosts, Tuesday, October 22

True, personal stories, told live, without notes. Pretty much exactly like The Moth except without the competition, on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, and everyone knows each other (or is about to). Our next theme is “Ghosts“, and we’ve got a few storyteller slots left.

This crowd won’t boo at you →

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday, October 23

The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time. $5, or free for Company and Moonlight members.

Work together →

Jam Night, Thursday, October 24

Some of us have been getting together to jam every once in a while, and it’s been so much fun. I haven’t played music with other people in a quite a long time and these are some really fun people to play music with. If you’re the kind of person who’s down for a very loose jam session, reply and let me know.

Next Week:

Ballot Study Hall, Sunday, October 27

Last year Livvy didn’t know which of the 17 mayoral candidates she wanted to vote for and so she invited all of them to come talk to her (and other residents in the building where we live) about why we should vote for them. Only three of the candidates didn’t come to her impromptu hyperlocal civic engagement project: one of them was our now mayor, Mike Johnston.

Anyway, Livvy wants to have a study hall to go through the Blue Book. Don’t expect any candidates to show up—it’s gonna be super chill. It’s more so an appointment to read through your Blue Book and discuss with friends and fill out your ballot.

Don’t be like Mike; show up →

Mary Ann’s Book Club: The Watchers, Monday, October 28

Do you like being scared? Then you’ll love this month’s book pick. Mary Ann’s Book Club switches between fiction and nonfiction, and this month’s book is A.M. Shine’s The Watchers. Instead of a lengthy discussion, we’ll mostly be watching the movie and having a short discussion after. Sign up even if you don’t plan to read but still wanna watch.

Who watches The Watchers? →

Block Printing Class, Tuesday, October 29

Justin (known to many as Big Movie Guy) is going to be teaching an introduction to block printing. Given recent woes we’ve had with modern printing technology this might become our new thing. Only three slots left in this class, and the deadline to sign up is Wednesday, October 23.

Also coming up: Moonlight Showcase, PowerPoint Party No. 20, Yoga with Dan, Homecoming.

Nostalgia

Do you remember setting up for Dan’s first Company yoga class? How we closed the blinds to keep it cool, and left them closed to keep it calm? How people filtered in, and how it was all so moving?

How long we talked afterward?

The trees outside, the visiting friends, that Justin waged war with the printer and prevailed not?

How I finally got to use my paper-cup telephone?

Do you remember the knife sharpening workshop? How before Trevr showed up we thought about all greeting him at the door with our knives out, but didn’t get to it in time? How Livvy called to Mary Ann and both of them said “What?” and we laughed? That Elijah mentioned one of his tools was made out of diamonds and Halie perked up?

That they got back to work on the curb ramps? How Justin said that he had noise-cancelling headphones but not shaking-building-canceling shoes?

The worknight? The star? That meanwhile at Make & Tell, some of us were meeting for the first time, finding connections, and cradling vases?

Do you remember how long we spent trying to find another night to watch the finale of Only Murders in the Building? That it reminded us of that time Allyson observed that it’s so hard to find time to hang out with each other because we’re too busy hanging out with each other?

Or Creative Mornings that month? How great it felt to see so many friends that had once been strangers?

Bureaucratic Minutiae

  • The espresso machine is in the space and ready to use; the burr grinder has been cleaned and is ready to use; we've acquired a knife making artifact from Elijah, and a new artwork from Lee.

  • We have brand new curb-ramps outside. We can’t tell how they’re better, but we trust that they are.

  • Join or Die, which we screened in early September, is now on Netflix, and if you didn’t get a chance to see it we hiiiiiighly recommend you do. Even if it doesn’t convince you to join our club, we hope you’ll be convinced to join something (or invest more heavily in what you’re already a part of). Watch the trailer to it here.

  • At Yoga with Dan: Dan led people through various poses and progressions.

  • At the Knife Sharpening Workshop: we learned about bevels, what honing rods do, and how to use different whetstone grits.

  • At Worknight: Lizzie finished Homecoming fliers, Molly compiled song lyrics, Livvy wrote some drafts, Madison ideated for a performance review, Big Movie Guy wrote one page of his screenplay, Halie applied, drafted, and RSVP’d some things, and Lizzie finished culling a wedding gallery.

  • Notes have been added to the PowerPoint Party No. 19 event page.

  • Finally, a reminder that The Company is a membership-supported mixed-use creative space, and if you know any of us, you’re welcome to pop in any time for free (outside of events). If you know that one of us is here and you’d like to come by, reach out and we can let you in.

Do you know anyone in the Denver area who might be looking for creative community? Feel free to forward this email along to them. Everyone loves Paperwork.

Dan teaching yoga at Yoga with Dan.
Last week while Dan was teaching Yoga with Dan I was hiding in the green room writing Paperwork and occasionally snapping photos.
The crowd at Yoga with Dan.
I’m really good at being sneaky so no one saw me take this one.
A weird photo of some trees.
So much better than the northern lights.
A group of people standing around a table.
A few months ago Norton, Livvy, and I went to a Collective Misnomer art show with Company Justin, and we showed up before him with the goal of finding a friend of his also named Justin. Without having Company Justin with us to point him out, I decided that the best course of action was to just start asking people if they were Justin. The guy on the left was the first person I asked, and he said that no, he wasn’t Justin, he was Mark. On Tuesday, Mark walked in with a friend because Company Justin, who hadn’t met him at the Collective Misnomer show, met him at some other event sometime after that, and said he should come by sometime.
A man helplessly trying to fix a printer.
St. Justin Fighting the Dragon.
Two people using paper-cup telephones.
Justin sits just a few desks away but I find it really hard to hear him most of the time. A while back I made this paper-cup telephone (thanks Trevr for the fishing line) and I finally had a good moment to pull it out this week. This picture doesn’t show it, but I made it just long enough that if we’re both sitting right at our desks it’s the right length.
Elijah drawing knife stuff on a whiteboard.
This was such a good workshop. Some of us used our newly sharpened knives a few days later and they were so sharp. We were truly cutting pieces of paper that we were holding in the air—just slicing through them. We might make this a quarterly party because most chores are better with friends.
Lee using a whetstone.
Most of us used sandpaper that we taped to blocks of wood but Lee had their own whetstone and looked so cool using it.
Mary Ann Tate cleaning off a knife.
This is such a great apron.
The corner of what used to be Ashland and Mary.
The city has been noisily redoing curb ramps in the neighborhood, and it was finally time for our corner. I’m quite sad that the tall grasses and sunflowers that were growing out of the cracks are now gone.
A pile of flagstones.
The hundred-year-old flagstones were saved. Marcia knows someone who will give them a good home.
A hooligan attempts to vandalize not-so-freshly-poured concrete.
We tried to do that thing where you leave a mark on freshly poured concrete but we were far too late.
A crowd in a beautiful studio space.
Norton and I missed worknight for Make & Tell and it was so great. Really great tellers, really cool people, and such a beautiful space.
A group sitting in a dark room.
Some more progress on OMITB.
Some companions at a Creative Mornings.
Creative Mornings has been a meaningful community for many of us and it was sweet to look around the room at this last one and see how much our Company community overlaps.
