Happenings

This week:

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday, July 9

The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time.

$5, or free for Company and Moonlight members

Work together →

Offsite: Kidney Thieves Show, Friday, July 11

Trevr, longtime member of The Company and of our sporadic jam sessions, is in a non-sporadic band called Kidney Thieves, and they’re playing at Bar 404 at 8p on Friday. A lot of us are going and so should you.

$5 cover at the door.

Listen for thieves →

Future Weeks:

Glint: Language, Tuesday, July 15

True, personal stories, told live, without notes. Pretty much exactly like The Moth, except without the competition, on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, and everyone knows each other (or is about to). Our next theme is “Language“, and we’ve got storyteller spots left.

Do you have a story of words, interpretations, confusion, or translation? Curses, mother tongues, or grasping the meaning of things? Whatever your interpretation, we want to hear it.

$10, or free for tellers and members.

Note: Cuppa will be open during this event!

Watch your language →

Also coming up: Creative Coding Demo Day. No. 12 (July 19), Offsite: Make & Tell (July 24), Mary Ann’s Book Club: Principles for Dealing with Changing World Order (July 28).

Nostalgia

Do you remember the continuation of our tiny watch party in the Kissing Room? That hours later we joined a larger party in the middle of a giant crowd at Jazz in the Park? How the sun shone so bright and so hot, but some of us were very prepared for that? That we talked and snacked and walked, and watched the sky change colors while the crowd thinned away?

Do you remember the days without me? What all happened? I saw the photos—the reading, the walk, the two of you dressed up and smiling brightly—but what else happened? What is it that you remember about those days, in that week between pride and independence?

Do you remember the Weekly Wednesday Worknight? How I returned just in time for it, and how the list of everything we worked on sounded so corporate?

The well-attended River-on-the-river 4th-of-July outing? The hot dogs, the hot dogs, the photos, and the photos of the photos?

Do you remember the prep for PowerPoint Party No. 28? Our vain attempts to cool the room? Mason and Ian’s brave vanquishing of the wasps?

The good crowd? The new friends? The old friends from out of town? The parents? The introductions, the heat, the information? How once again we learned so much? How once again we lingered, in pockets, in different places?

Bureaucratic Minutiae

  • At Thginkrow: Jessica updated a budget, Livvy worked on gathering documents for an accountant, Norton scanned and uploaded June punchards, Ivan created a pricing spreadsheet, and Alex finished a slide deck, altogether making it seem quite like we were running a proper company.

  • At PowerPoint Party No. 28: Lauren T. shared about her work in animal shelters, Alex Prinsen traced the history of climbing mountains, Halie gave a BoTalk about Botox, Kayla rated rating systems, a pirate named Adam instructed us about how to play a character, Lauren S. told us to brush our teeth at night, Gabriela shared about her non-sacrificial travels to Sweden, Jessica P. explained the connection between malaria and mauve, McKenna habló sobre el Camino de Santiago, Micah explored chess as an allegory for the human condition, and Emily reminded us (and herself) why she’s still a teacher.

  • Finally, a reminder that The Company is a member-supported gathering place, and if you know any of us, you’re welcome to pop in any time for free (outside of events). A variable amount of us work out of here during the workday, and you’re welcome to join us. If you know that one of us is here and you’d like to come by, reach out and we can let you in.

Photos

River, member number 2.5, joined us for Jazz in the Park. Photo by Lizzie.
As did all these other people. Mark knew half of them. Photo by Lizzie.
The sky afterward. Photo by Lizzie.
I wasn’t here for this and I really can’t tell if they’re pretending to read or if this was posed. Photo by Chris.
I’m less unsure about whether or not this photo was posed. Also, Eric totally look’s like a spy doing a really bad job of trying to infiltrate The Company. Very obviously a spy. Photo by Norton.
A walk, I presume. Photo by Michelle.
I returned to a confusing set of photos of these two on the camera, and later learned that they were celebrating their five year wedding anniversary with a nice dinner down the street and popped in for the Paperwork photo op. (Don’t worry, we’ve got photos of you guys with Alex’s eyes open—I just liked this one the best) Photo by Livvy.
I was in St. Louis for a few days for a work thing and came straight from the airport to Worknight.
And the final photo in what appears to be this issue’s Alex series. Photo by Chris.
Sam knitting at the river! I had to work so I had to miss this, but doesn’t this seem like such a nice time? Photo by Chris.
This river outing was prompted by Drew, who recurringly returns to rivers with River. Photo by Lizzie.
Mason planning to remove a wasps nest that had been growing on our awning by hitting it with the end of a broom.
The wasps remained without their nests, but thankfully Ian (who Jessica S. often reminds us can do everything, which is true) jumped in to help us finish the job with some ant killer we found lying around.
Once it was safe enough we opened the door to watch him nab one last straggler.
PowerPoint Party before the show.
The section of Lauren T.’s presentation where she told us about naming a dog.
Oh nope just kidding this is the last photo of Alex this issue.
Halie’s long-promised BoTalk! Which some people hardly raised an eyebrow about.
Kayla rating rating systems using a rating system that she rated as one of the worst rating systems is an S-Tier presentation concept. Also: she’s a Google Maps influencer!
Adam’s got so much range. He has presented about photographing insects, has almost bled to death, and is also fully a pirate.
Lauren S.’s health PSAs are super informative and also make me nervous about the nation.
Oh yes, see here: the pirate can take sick photos. A side note in Gabriela’s presentation about Sweden.
Jessica P. on the fascinating origins of mauve. I imagine Simon saw the presentation and thought to himself “beautiful color.”
I was informed after McKenna’s presentation that I will be doing this same walk some day.
Micah’s metaphors rarely miss, but when they do it’s intentional and very funny. Speaking of, that chess game that we played at a dance—he won that game. Which is kind of like winning at a dance.
One of the few photos I got of Emily not buckled over laughing.
Livvy hugging (a different) Emily, who knows us from long before PowerPoint Parties.
Nat, a friend who knows Michelle from long before PowerPoint Parties, in her second of four scouting trips before she moves to Denver.
