PowerPoint Party No. 38 post-intermission announcements
IVAN and LIVVY stand at a microphone at the front of a crowd, lit by a spotlight. The crowd murmurs.
LIVVY: Lastly, we have one other upcoming event we would like to make you aware of. It’s farther out than we usually announce.
The slide advances to a calendar view of October, with the standard events scattered throughout: Worknights, a PowerPoint Party, Creative Writing Workshop, Glint, In the Making, Mary Ann’s Book Club.
LIVVY: In fact, it’s all the way in October. But please loosely mark your calendars for sometime around October 27—
The slide changes, fading the events into the background and highlighting a new event on October 27, listed as ??? .
LIVVY: —when Ivan and I are having a baby!
The crowd cheers loudly. LIVVY tears up at the reaction. IVAN beams. The cheering continues. The slide advances. The event marked ??? now says Baby! with a New! sticker on top. IVAN kisses LIVVY on the head. The cheering continues. IVAN and LIVVY smile and bow. IVAN leans into the microphone. The cheering subsides.
IVAN: Okay, so there are many origin myths about this place. Here’s another one:
Just over two years ago, Livvy and I were thinking a little more seriously about having a kid, but were so scared by the stories we’d heard about new parents becoming isolated and lonely. We had also started hosting events in our apartment, and we wondered what would happen to us if there was a time when our space could no longer be available. What would become of the community that we loved? Uh, what would—what would that mean for us and what would happen, uh, to the community that our friends loved?
So we started The Company.
We hoped that by investing deeply into a community, and supporting a community space, it might help us have a supportive community at a time when we’d need it most. But then it turned out to be even better than we dreamt. The specific memories that we’ve made here, and the specific people that we’ve met or deepened friendships with here, we couldn’t have imagined. It’s our favorite thing we’ve ever done, and that we will keep doing.
LIVVY: A question some people may ask, and fairly, is: How could anyone bring a child into this world, at a time like this? But into this world?
LIVVY points at the room. Her voice breaks.
LIVVY: How could we not?
IVAN: We love you guys a lot, and we are so excited that you are the world our child will be coming into. And we’re excited to bring you one more person to care for, to welcome, and to be curious about.
Thank you.
END

Happenings
This week:
The Original Fiction Show, Sunday, May 3
This is in the past, but we’ll be doing these quarterly. Catch the next one? And if you’re interested in reading at the next one, reply to this email, or talk to Madeleine or me the next time you see us.
Creative Writing Workshop: Wonder, Monday, May 4
Also in the past, but they happen every month.
Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday, May 6
The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time.
$5, free for Company and Moonlight members
Future Weeks:
Glint: Weather, Tuesday, May 12
True, personal stories, told live, without notes. Pretty much exactly like The Moth, except without the competition, on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, and everyone knows each other (or is about to). Our next theme is “Weather“.
Was it a dark and stormy night, or the most glorious morning? Did you get stranded, delayed, or caught? Are you lost in the mist? Who dug you out of the avalanche? How did you break the ice? How did you get out of small talk? Have you ever been struck by lightning? What did you survive and how? What have you weathered? Whatever your interpretation, we want to hear it.
Come hear from Joshua, James, Madeleine, Christof, Mark, Riah, Beth, Sylvia, Allyson, me, Gabby, and Bear, or join the waitlist to tell your own story.
$10, or free for tellers and members.
Anniversary Party, Friday, May 15
The Company is turning two! And for its second birthday we’re going to celebrate it much like the first: with a rare, unstructured, relatively unthemed, very casual, deeply BYO party. It’ll be here, at The Company (of course), at 6:30. Pizza will be provided.
Free
CyborgCamp, Friday, May 29–Saturday, May 30
For very many years, Case has hosted an unconference that explores what it means to be human in a world increasingly shaped by technology. This year, Case is hosting that unconference at The Company!
There’s a pre-party on Friday evening, and a full day on Saturday of talks, lightning talks, deep discussions, and a few surprises. There’ll be special guests, good food, and drinks by Cuppa.
Free–$250, $25 for members

Also coming up: Mary Ann’s Book Club (May 18), Creative Code Denver Meetup No. 14 (May 18) In the Making (May 21), Creative Writing Workshop: Shelter (June 1) PowerPoint Party No. 39 (June 6)
Nostalgia
Do you remember the day when Lauren T. reviewed the photos from Prom and couldn’t keep it together? Our lunchtime tangent about talking speed? How we imagined asking people to speak at 1.5x or to skip forward 15 seconds?
Or the book club about Invisible Women? The sad facts and minor critiques? Do you remember how Lauren T. described a disappointing medical interaction, and said “so I went back to the doctor because I found this meta analysis”? McKenna’s claw rating?
Do you remember the REI trip? How the strange pipes were finally gone, and we could walk to the river again? How we talked about Livvy’s toxic trait on the way back?
The movie night with the film about the paper industry? How we tried to yell at Norton through the floor? That we got to meet Joe’s mom? The pizza misdelivery and rescue operation? How we set up our own previews while we waited? That we watched, and laughed, and gasped at all the dark comedy? The surprise visit of Dan and Michelle and Lea as we closed up? Their gift of Salty-O?
Do you remember the workday with Emily? Her curiosity about this place, and our lunchtime admiration of her avocados? The tension that arose over semiotics and telephones? The talk about reading?
That it was raining outside so some of us played cards and some of us danced?
Our work night break where we again discussed Livvy’s toxic trait? How, at the end of the night, we had the most efficient un- and re-raveling of a star?
The after-lunch conversation about things that can’t be undone? How long the list is? How at recess we wondered what we might have spent 10,000 hours doing? The late afternoon appearance of Will? How he was invited to join Screenshot Club? That we talked about his new bagel hobby?
Do you remember the surprisingly calm Friday morning? The First Friday Feast at Avanti? How Dan was there, and we sat in a new spot? That we ran into Marcia on the walk back?
And do you remember the PowerPoint Party in May? That really special one? How we learned about snakes and history and energy politics and bags and cooking and the oldest song? That Livvy and I announced that we were expecting a new member? How loud and long the world cheered for them? That we then learned about depth and currency and decks and dopamine and markets and the meaning of community?
How we lingered and talked and did less resetting than usual? Do you remember the moon that hung above 15th when we left?
Our transit to bartaco? How upset we were about the new ordering system? Our admiration of Case’s miniature fruit and new notebook? Our complaints about UX, and our discussion of hacking and tactical urbanism?
Bureaucratic Minutiae
- The Kissing Room AC has finally been properly secured. It now takes significantly more effort to drop it out the window.
- Mary Ann’s Book Club rated Invisible Women 3.9
- At Worknight: Alex wrote 2 thank you cards and read some of one chapter; Ivan and Madeleine created an outline for the Beth story; Jessica worked on posting journal entries; Morgan worked on the Roman Art History module; Livvy posted a summary to a work Slack channel and submitted her Moonlight goal; Norton worked on unpacking and cleaning his living room and kitchen lobby closet (also known as a kloset); Mary Ann readied Ridwell recycling and outlined Single White Female Post #2; and Case called Japan, did something with neuroscience findings, and read “synthetics - a cross-modal approach to reality” paper. Recap by Livvy.
- At PowerPoint Party No. 38: Kirk encouraged us to give snakes a chance, Marcia told us about the history of her iPhone wallpaper, Andrew gave a survey of some context to the energy crisis, Stuart pitched us a line of bags for practical snacking, Elijah gave us tips on things one can make and consume using utensils, Ellen conducted us in the oldest song written in English, Mark introduced us to his scuba diving metaphor, Bobcat talked about the contradiction behind currency, Micah gave us more information about his Magic: The Gathering deck, José tried to deal us some offline dopamine, Sam Ad. raced us through an introduction to the markets, and Lauren S. explored the differences between cults and communities.

We have a time clock. Partially because, hey, we’re a Company! And mostly because we love having a physical record of (almost) everyone who’s been in the space. People punch in and out when they visit. At the end of each month, we stack up all the cards by visit count in the Fibonacci sequence. Here’s the data for April 2026:
1 visit: 92 people
2 visits: 13 people
3–4 visits: 8 people
5–7 visits: 9 people
8–12 visits: 8 people
13–20 visits: 5 people
21+ visits: 3 peopleTotal people: 138
People who came more than once: 46Other notes:
- Thanks to Alex for help numbering and sorting punch cards (again!) this month.
- All 3 Management are together again in the 21+ column. 🥹 That hasn’t been true since October 2025.
- This month tied for the most total unique visitors of any month at The Company so far: 138. February 2026 had the exact same number of total unique visitors.
- Of the 138 total unique visitors, exactly 1/3 of them came back more than once.
- Several new-to-the-space people showed up at some unique events! Welcome to every one who stopped by for the Passover Seder, the Prinsen Baby Shower, and Prom.
- We were visited by former Denver Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Debbie Ortega! How cool!
- Context: The 1s column shows the people who visited only one time this month. Of those people, we annotate what they attended. You can see that many people only attended PowerPoint Party, but those people are not the only people who attended PowerPoint Party. (Others who attended PowerPoint Party are also scattered through the other columns.)
- Related to that: We usually annotate people who only came to In The Making, but this month, no one who attended only once attended In The Making. Meaning: every single attendee at In The Making was also in the space for other reasons this month.
- Note: We don’t generally record visitors to Cuppa if they are only stopping in for Cuppa. Many people came through the space that are not represented here!
- Inevitably: incomplete and messy data.
Writeup by Livvy - Finally, a reminder that The Company is a member-supported gathering place, and if you know any of us, you’re welcome to pop in any time for free (outside of events). If you know that one of us is here and you’d like to come by, reach out and we can let you in.
