vol. 2, no. 4 | Resolution

Something I really like about being in a community of this kind—a thing I’ve mentioned before—is that there are so many stories taking place at the same time, with different timescales.

For the people I see the most, I see things unfold mostly in real time. But for the people I see less frequently, stories happen piecemeal, in minor and sometimes major updates. Sometimes I hear inklings, see troubles and hopes, and then way later, once I’ve forgotten, there’s a followup.

I see the job frustrations, hear about housing, learn about crushes, friendships, see the research projects, the rabbit holes, the aspirations, the dreams. And then I learn what happened. What went wrong, what went right, what changed. I get closure.

I get to see the rings.

It’s a wondrous life we’re all living, and I’m so grateful for any and all of the moments any of you have chosen to share with me.

I’m so sorry, and congratulations! And most of all, and always, thank you for your company.

—Ivan

Happenings

This week:

Weekly Wednesday Worknight, Wednesday, June 11

The Company is about combining creative work with good friendships. Make an appointment with your side project this (or any) Wednesday at a Worknight, where we oscillate between enforced, focused, quiet time and optional chatty social time.

$5, or free for Company and Moonlight members.

Work together →

Next Week:

Glint: Crossroads, Tuesday, June 17

True, personal stories, told live, without notes. Pretty much exactly like The Moth, except without the competition, on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, and everyone knows each other (or is about to). Our next theme is “Crossroads“, and we’ve got a few storyteller slots left.

Do you have a story of a big decision? A turning point? A time when you made an irreversible, or reversible choice? A brief moment of connection? A story about literal roadways? Whatever your interpretation, we want to hear it.

$10, or free for tellers and members.

Note: Cuppa will be open during this event!

This will be worth crossing the road for →

Also coming up: Creative Coding Demo Day (June 21), In The Making (June 26), Mary Ann’s Book Club (June 30).

Nostalgia

Do you remember the cold recess with the ice cream stop?

How we stood in the park and watched the crane construct itself and unfurl? The joy of seeing the pirate flag, noticing the counterweights, and watching it wobble? That Lizzie had to leave before it ended, and we hugged goodbye? That we clapped when it finished, and the workers laughed at our clapping?

The Stop the Bleed Class? How unexpectedly funny it was? How excited and happy everyone was to talk about bleeding? To practice cutting off each other’s circulation?

Do you remember the recess with all the tree-climbing? The cuts and scrapes?

Worknight? How it was quiet and steady and productive and once again celebratory?

That recess when you walked me to another recess, to talk about another recess?

How happy you were when Justin walked in on Friday, after a week of an empty desk; and despite the work pressures you played a game that had you laughing and screaming and gambling?

Do you remember the PowerPoint Party? That lineup full of surprises, puns, facts, and stories? How it felt, just a tiny bit, like a live radio show when the credits came on?

The meeting, the lingering, the catching up, the resetting?

Bureaucratic Minutiae

  • The Made Shop has announced three dates for Make and Tell, which inspired In The Making, but more importantly introduced us to Justin (who convinced us to start The Company), and to Michelle (who convinced us The Company was worth it). July 17, August 21, September 18. Follow them on Instagram to stay posted.

  • Thanks to Survival Scouts, we are now in possession of a Stop the Bleed Kit, along with a sizable group of people who know how to use it! We would like to be clear that this is NOT an invitation to start profusely bleeding while at The Company, but we are now better prepared for the possibility, though only if it is in your arms and legs. The kit is located near the bathroom.

  • We subscribe to a service called Ridwell! Our usage of which is managed by Mary Ann B. with assistance from Lexi. If, like Mary Ann T., you are perplexed by the predicament of what can and cannot be recycled, we invite you to check it out and consider subscribing for yourself (or dropping things off at The Company).

  • At Worknight: Patrick worked on janky Vanilla RPS versus site client then steam in VM, Jessica synced VS code settings and used V1 to create a person, Norton worked on replacing 1 ERB view with Phlex, Alex implemented hardware connectivity polling and planned exercise for the week, Livvy processed a lamp return and did five things from her personal to-do list, Ivan worked on uploading font samples to his website, and Allyson finished a PowerPoint presentation.

  • At PowerPoint Party No. 27: Simon helped us appreciate roofing materials, Sabrina showed us photos from her Greece trip (and casually dropped that she got engaged), Adam gave us a difficult scenario, Nick told us about polymaths, Taryn introduced us to the many wonders of cuttlefish, Jacob taught us about politics or Star Wars or voting or ranking or rating, Allyson completed her trilogy of fresco talks, Ronak impressed upon us the magnitude and speed of the space program, Trevr made puns about bees, Mary Ann T. asked a very good question, Greg described one man’s descent into madness, and Zack presented about tire pressure, and hey, don’t tires, from a certain profile, look a little bit like a ring?

  • Thanks to Patrick and Jessica for helping us set up, to Justin and Halie for taking tickets, to Alex for keeping time and for performing an original interruption score, and to everyone for helping us reset the room. We apologize to all of the above, but especially Alex, for failing to credit you in the outro.

  • All the book club books we’ve ever read can be seen here.

  • Finally, a reminder that The Company is a member-supported gathering place, and if you know any of us, you’re welcome to pop in any time for free (outside of events). If you know that one of us is here and you’d like to come by, reach out and we can let you in.

  • And again, we profoundly apologize to Alex for forgetting to credit his original interruption score at PowerPoint Party No. 27.

Photos

On the way to recess. Notice how no one in this photo has any idea how off-the-rails exciting our day is about to become.
It’s a crane! Constructing itself! It became tiring to crane our necks (heh) so Norton and Patrick leaned back while holding on to the fence. Photo by Lizzie.
It was glorious. On our walk back we realized we could have much more easily watched this whole thing unfold from Little Man Ice Cream, where the view was entirely unobscured by trees. Photo by Lizzie.
Mark fully thought he had gotten a ticket to the sold-out Stop The Bleed class, and can be seen here begging Jim for mercy.
I got in using my press pass.
Stopping bleeding is so fun! Look at how much fun these people are having! Adam, a healthcare professional, volunteered to have his real leg tourniquet-ed for demonstration purposes.
As I understand it, using the tourniquet on civilians wasn’t part of the plan, but once people saw how much fun Adam had losing circulation to his extremities, everyone was interested in giving it a try for themselves.
Mark’s cousin Andrew (who did get a ticket) also has experience with stopping bleeding, and is here showing what to do when you don’t have a tourniquet handy.
Recess again, without the distraction of a crane.
Worknight.
Star ceremony prep.
I wasn’t here for this moment, but I’m told that this game was so much fun that it was decided it was important to play it again to get a photo. Norton can be seen here being an honest man, unwilling to reenact the moment for the sake of a photo. Photo by Livvy.
Sometimes presentations are interactive. People have handed out wood, poems, silver, and at this one, roofing materials.
If you live in Golden, I think you have an aesthetic duty to visit this house and admire the roof.
Surprisingly this was not the only engagement announcement of the night. Congratulations again, Sabrina and Cale!
Adam, who earlier in the week would have bled to death were it not for Jim’s quick action, explains another way that he is good at pretending.
Nick taught us about a bygone era in history when one could conceivably comprehend comprehensively.
Taryn told us how much they love cuttlefish, along with many fascinating facts about them, one of which is the disappointing-to-me reminder that it’s spelled cuttlefish not cuddlefish.
We had a lot of great photos of Jacob and picked the one in which he is posed most like a cartoon character.
Intermission spam musubi porch club.
Part three of Allyson’s fresco epic.
Audience!
“because they are hahd!”
You would think at least one of Trevr’s bee puns would fail, but no pun in ten did.
A reporter’s-journey-style presentation about the predicament of recycling. Also, here’s a good time to re-mention Ridwell!
A thoroughly delightful presentation by my former doppelganger Greg.
A fun thing about live content is that you can really bury the lede on something, and don’t have to worry about people fast forwarding or clicking away. You can really play with letting the pressure reduce and build—
and then surprise everyone with an announcement that you have just gotten engaged. Congratulations Zack and Niera! A fun detail that Zack shared me with later is that they got engaged at the Botanic Gardens at probably the same time that many of us were lying around at Cheesman park.
The newly engaged pairs swapping engagement stories!
Post-PowerPoint Party cleanup and lingering.
