3.16 — Speedrun

        The last few weeks have been pretty thin. Not so much in terms of company (though there have also been fewer folks around), but in terms of major events—partially the result of one cancellation, and partially a quirk of how we space out our major events. The next few weeks, though, they’re p a c k e d . It’s the kind of pace that, if you just started coming to events this week, and kept coming back the next few, you could easily get to know everyone pretty quickly. Even become a regular.

Mary Ann’s Book Club is reading The Score for tonight’s bookclub. I’m way behind, but it’s about games and metrics. Worth reading. Also, could be fun, if you haven’t started it yet, to try finishing it in time for the discussion.

PowerPoint Party No. 42 is this Saturday, September 5. We’ve got an uncommon three slots wide open to anyone (who has attended a PowerPoint Party before) who wants to present. Madeleine’s next Creative Writing Workshop will be on Monday, September 7. The theme is Sensation. Come write, with good prompts and 90 minutes of companionable silence.
We’ll be hosting another ColoRadio listening party at The Company on Tuesday, September 8, at which there’ll be another edit of Beth’s haunted house story, among others.

Nostalgia
Do you remember the new batch of Adam’s records? The workday with Beth and Amber? Our first taste of the sidewalk peaches?
Or the surprise of Joel at Worknight? The tragicomedy of Lauren T.’s rainstorm departure? The tiny, flawless star ceremony at the end?
The morning with Helena? The afternoon skepticism about whether Mark was really doing well? Our very hot walk around the block? Wow afterward we listened and reflected on the six minute meditation on friendship?
Do you remember Marissa’s placenta shirt? The late-day appearance of Ellen, still in time for recess? The second set of sidewalk peaches?
Bureaucratic Minutiae

So far, only a few people have ever achieved a Company speedrun (speedrunning referring, of course, to a certain style of playing video games where you try to complete a goal in as short a time as possible). Last fall, Ryan Farmer handily beat Jessica S.’s previous speed, with a time of a single month. Very early on, Lizzie Haener had the quickest hearing-about-to-visiting-The Company time, with a day-of visit after a Creative Mornings meeting, though early speedruns are excluded from most datasets due to the nascence of the community at the time. Vivian, a recent shoo-in and audience favorite, has been unfortunately hampered by her inability to connect very well with many people, along with her interminable scheduling conflicts.
Sidewalk peaches have been harvested and are available for taking. The reviews are mixed, but only as a result of the peaches themselves being of varying quality. Take a couple. In the pink bucket by Whiteboard.
At Worknight: Livvy took a class and processed info; Ryan finished the docs first draft; Joel transcribed audio files; Lauren T. tried to cry for 25 minutes; Alex updated a feature to match designs; Ivan worked on drafting baby show slides; Jim made a 3D model of the a doorbell spacer, outlined his powerpoint, and put digital assets in Figma; and Jessica S. was foiled by a maintenance window. You can’t tell by this photo, but Lauren T. was at this moment a very sad person. After, but unrelated to, failing to complete her Worknight goal of crying for 25 minutes, she needed to leave Worknight early, but it was raining a hilarious amount.
After some brief searching around for a spare umbrella, she decided it might be nice for her emotional state to just run all the way to her car in the squall.
Here she can be seen successfully navigating the gutterfall that forms outside The Company. She made it safely, and soaked, and said it worked pretty great.

Another recess walk. I think all of us asked Marissa why she was wearing a shirt that said Placenta. In my fact-checking for this issue I have learned that Placentia is a suburb of Orange County, California, and the wrecking yard which Marissa is advertising is no longer in business.
