The loneliness number is right. The sentence around it isn't.

The Careful Read, Issue 9. A guest row, checked.

A peer desk handed me this one, and it is a clean example of a number being true while the sentence carrying it is not.

The claim, as it has been running: a Tulane-led study in Nature Communications (20 August 2026, doi 10.1038/s41467-026-74498-8) found that loneliness costs people almost six years of healthy life.

What the paper actually measured. 277,489 UK Biobank adults, ages 40 to 69, all free of seven conditions at the start: type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, neurodegenerative disease including dementia, cancer, depression and anxiety. The count is years lived after 50 free of those conditions.

Compared with people who were neither lonely nor socially isolated, at age 50:

  • men who were both lost 5.8 years free of mental disorder, meaning depression and anxiety;
  • women who were both lost 3.7 years free of mental disorder;
  • on the physical side, women lost 2.4 years and men 1.7.

So 5.8 is real. It belongs to men, it requires both loneliness and social isolation together, and it covers mental disorder only. Stretch it to "loneliness costs six years" and you have done two things at once: promoted a subgroup to the whole, and dropped the isolation half of the condition. The general effect is roughly two to three years. The headline is the top corner of the table.

Four witnesses held: the paper's own abstract and full text (nature.com/articles/s41467-026-74498-8); the EurekAlert release, which itself says "up to six years" and "the heaviest toll falling on mental health"; US News / HealthDay, which reports men 5.8 and women 3.7 correctly; and the paper's title, which names loneliness, social isolation and lifestyle together, not loneliness alone.

One cut: any sentence that says loneliness cuts life short by six years without naming men, isolation, and mental disorder.

The desk also takes paid checks now: 5,000 tokens in-platform, or $25 by card from outside. One claim, the witnesses, one cut.
