The Rec Center #324
Hello everyone! This week we have pieces on fan edits and boyband fandom in Turning Red, some lovely Dune fanart, and multifandom crossover fic! — Elizabeth
new stuff
“Turning Red celebrates how pop fandom shapes our lives for the better” by Maria Sherman at the Guardian
“Shi’s wonderful film argues that acute fandom, of the kind so many young girls have for boy bands, remixes a general love of music into something more potent: a way to understand both your individual and common identities.”
“Fan edits are the internet’s love language” by Elena Cavender at Mashable
In praise of the fan edit, featuring quotes from fans who make edits as well as fan studies scholar Francesca Coppa. (PSA! Coppa’s most recent book, Vidding: A History, is open access, so you can read it online for free!)
“A Sudden Outcry: The Tolkien Estate and Fanworks” at the Silmarillion Writers’ Guild
If you’ve seen some of the…interesting stances from the Tolkien Estate about fanfic and other fanworks, this post dispels some of that misinformation. (tl;dr keep writing your LOTR fic lol)

Dune fanart by redundantz
An extremely cute pic of Elijah Wood napping on the LOTR set.
Akagi fanart (too gory for us to screencap in the main post!)
Truly one of the best Elden Ring details.

fanfiction
This week’s theme: crossovers! Note that as far as we can tell, these are true crossovers—characters from one world meeting/engaging with characters from another—and not fusions (e.g., a Pacific Rim AU). Thank you very much to everyone who sent in a rec. — Elizabeth
“The Five Stages of Neighborly Affection” by AlannaLioness, phonecallfromgod, and youshallnotfinditso. 19K words or ~2 hours in podfic, rated Teen.
Fandoms: Daredevil, Batman; Ship: Foggy Nelson/Matt Murdock
Recced by: mlraven
Backstory: The summary says it all: “Between Matt being back from the dead, Nelson & Murdock 2.0 and a fancy Manhattan apartment from his (former) sharky boss, Foggy feels like he’s doing pretty well keeping the vigilante nonsense in his life to a minimum. Or he was until he moved next door to Tim Drake.”
Rec: Foggy-centric, almost a comedy of errors, hilarious identity porn for what would be a realistic in-universe crossover. In both written and podfic form!

“Untitled Goose Fic” by aeli_kindara. 2.5K words, rated Gen.
Fandoms: Supernatural, Untitled Goose Game; Ship: Gen
Recced by: Ladylark
Backstory: ‘It’s a lovely morning in Lebanon, Kansas. And you are a horrible goose.’ Untitled Goose Game recently took the world by storm with its chaotic goose antics. Chaos is a frequent theme in Supernatural. Combining the two somehow seems inevitable.
Rec: This fic was inspired by a piece of fan art depicting the horrible goose stealing the keys to the Winchester’s beloved Impala. And it captures the spirit of the game beautifully while also being a hilarious outsider view into the daily lives of the Supernatural characters. Rarely have I seen such a deft and perfect use of second person narrative.

“The Wizarding World Job” by snarkangel (eskimita). 22K (WIP), rated Gen.
Fandoms: Harry Potter, Leverage; Ships: Canon pairings
Recced by: Sainatsukino
Backstory: Leverage is a TV show in which a team of criminals help people, Robin Hood style. Harry Potter is a serie of books in which a kid discovers he is a wizard and goes to wizard school.
Rec: Is "someone decent adopts Harry Potter" a trope? Because it’s a common crossover setup, and one I adore. In this fic, Eliott sees uncle Vernon hit Harry at the train station after Harry comes back from his first year at Hogwards, and sees red. He, Parker, and Hardison decide to take the kid under their wings. In Parker’s words: let’s go steal a wizard! A very, very well written fic.
Content warnings: Mentions of child abuse/neglect

“the guard place” by thirtysixhudson. 528 words, Not Rated.
Fandoms: The Old Guard, The Good Place; Ship: Gen
Recced by: likeafox
Backstory: Based off a fantastic tumblr post, this is a short but devastatingly funny exploration of what would happen if Jason Mendoza became the newest member of the Old Guard’s crew of immortals.
Rec: This is the Old Guard/Good Place crossover we all need and deserve.

“Head of the Heartbreak Brigade” by AlannaLioness and youshallnotfinditso. 19K words, rated Gen.
Fandoms: Marvel Cinematic Universe, DCU (Comics); Ship: Clark Kent/Steve Rogers
Recced by: anon
Backstory: Steve Rogers and Clark Kent meet, date, and break up.
Rec: I just really love both these characters. It’s interesting to see how they compare when they’re in the same environment because a lot of people consider them the same character archetype, and this fic deconstructs that.
Content warnings: Mild violence
“World Enough and Time” by laiqualaurelote. 52K words, rated Teen.
Fandoms: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Doctor Who (2005); Ships: Phryne Fisher/Jack Robinson, plus numerous background pairings and friendships
Recced by: OzQueen
Backstory: 1929 is going terribly for Jack Robinson, who is about to be suspended for trying to do his job. Then a glamorous time-travelling alien crashes his ex-wife’s wedding, absconds with his feelings, and whisks him out of 1929 altogether. After all, there’s a whole world out there. A Doctor Who AU.
Rec: This is such a fun, gloriously written fic with rich detail and a real feel for the character voices. Phryne’s humour and exuberance is in full force, the mysteries/cases sit perfectly within both canon universes, and true thought and time is given to everyone’s development and interaction. Perfection.
