Dairy Intolerance in Cayce's Health Readings

Hi Friends,

Recently I was inspired to search through the Cayce readings for quotes about Cayce’s recommendation of using grape juice before meals to satiate cravings for sweets. I’ve covered Cayce’s recommendations of concord grape juice a few times in the past: Using Cayce’s ‘Grape Juice Diet’ for Weight Loss had two quotes from Cayce’s readings and shared some tips on what to look for when shopping for grape juice in our modern world.

The first result in my recent search for “grape juice” was the 208th reading for recipient #257, a 46 year old male. What I found most interesting was the question at the end of the reading about why the person found milk “disagreed” with their body:

27. (Q) Why does milk disagree with body?
(A) As indicated, the toxic conditions in the system make milk a harmful thing to the body at times, owing to the inability of the system to digest certain caseins in milk.

Cheese is much better, though this too - unless there are the cleansing forces - will be found to be disagreeable and to disagree with the body, if taken in any quantity.

(257-208)

The “toxic conditions” that “make milk a harmful thing to the body at times” was caused by the person’s problems with his large intestine. The reading recommended hydotherapy (as high colonics) as a way to help better eliminate his body’s waste products.

Casein is the term for the one of the two main types of protein in milk. Whey is the other type of protein. When milk is turned into cheese, casein protein is made to clump together (into curds). Whey separates from casein and is drained off with most of the water. Lactose is the main water soluble carbohydrate in milk, and is removed with the whey. Soft cheeses (ricotta, cottage cheese, etc) retain more of the whey and lactose.

Whey protein powders are commonly sold for human consumption. These products might be okay for growing children and for people who are actively building muscle. When people ask me about whey protein supplements, I usually say that whey is a waste product of the cheese industry. While it’s fine to consume whey as a component of milk or soft cheese, powdered whey protein is probably better used for animal feed than for adult humans who aren’t especially active.

Lactose and other forms of ‘dairy intolerance’

Cayce’s quote above, about cheese being more agreeable than milk, was especially interesting to me because of the experience of a friend. This woman realized she could drink milk again, at maybe 60 years old, by switching to lactose-free milk. But a few years later she told me that she just doesn’t especially care for cow milk anymore. Today she says she does okay with a “filtered milk” product, and would buy goat milk regularly if it wasn’t so expensive. I have another friend who can’t stand drinking milk, but he eats plenty of cheese.

Adults sometimes become lactose intolerant, where their small intestines ‘forget’ how to make lactase enzyme to break down the lactose sugar. A process was invented around 1985 to create lactose free milk. This process uses a manufactured form of lactase enzyme to split lactose into the simple sugars glucose and galactose.

“A2 milk” has proteins that are slightly different than those found in “A1 milk”. Wikipedia says that human, sheep, goat, donkey, yak, camel, and buffalo milks are all predominantly A2 proteins. Most cows produce A1 milk. There’s a genetic test that determines what type of protein a cow will put into its milk. (While the A2 milk gets a lot of promotion on packaging, most people do okay with A1 milk.)

In a previous blog post I discussed the Cayce instructions for using a bacterial culture to make bulgarian milk.

Dairy consumption assures you have an adequate Iodine intake

The most important thing about dairy is that it’s an iodine-rich food. The chart on my previous blog post, Food Sources of Iodine, shows that greek yogurt and milk are both good sources of iodine. Greek yogurt is strained to remove more of the whey, and is probably better than regular yogurt. It’s easy to turn regular yogurt into greek yogurt with a yogurt strainer or cheese cloth.

Making sure you have adequate iodine consumption is probably the single most important thing a person can do to improve their health. The Japanese people’s seafood-rich diet means they commonly consume >1mg iodine a day (1mg == 1000 μg [micrograms]), which is vastly more than the ~0.150mg recommended as the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance.

People who don’t have access to dairy products, seafood or eggs can supplement their iodine intake with Electric Iodine™, which is iodine crystal dissolved in ethanol and treated electrically.

When you put a drop of Electric Iodine into a glass of water, it forms a cloud of iodine crystals inside the water. Lugol’s iodine is a mixture of potassium iodide and free iodine in water. Lugol’s iodine mixes with water: it’s water soluble. I think Lugol’s iodine is good to have on hand for water disinfection or topical use as a disinfectant. I know some people like Lugol’s as an iodine supplement, but there are also reports about people making themselves hypothyroid with too much iodine intake.

Cayce’s Grape Juice Diet

This is the quote from reading 208-257 about using grape juice to help the recipient lose weight:

10. Also we find that grape juice taken three or four times each day would be very helpful. Take three-fourths grape juice and one-fourth water, and a small tumblerful would be taken, you see - as of an orange juice glass. This would be taken about half an hour before the meal is eaten.

The theory behind Cayce's recommendation to use grape juice before meals is that the body's sweet cravings are satiated by the sugars in grape juice. It takes about 20 minutes for hunger signals to be suppressed after eating. By consuming grape juice 30 minutes before a meal, a person won't be so hungry when they get to their main meal, and they'll be less likely to overeat.

The reading continued on into general dietary advice:

11. Do not eat too much of sweets. Light wines may be taken, but not strong drinks nor any fermentations as of beer or hops, - for these are not well, - the body is allergic to these.

12. Fish, fowl, lamb, - these are preferable as the meats, though other meats may be taken occasionally, - but these prepared in any manner save fried would be the better for the body.

13. Have vegetables that are of the leafy nature, rather than too many of the bulbous. Three at least of those above the ground to one below the ground, or in that proportion, should be the order for the body.

14. Potatoes are not tabu but are to be taken more or less scantily, - as would be white bread. Rye, whole wheat, pumpernickel, black or brown bread, - these are preferable.

Then the reading offered general advice about how to go about one's day:

15. The activities should be kept in line with that which has been indicated, - namely; work a while, rest a while, play a while. Improve the mind. Improve the body, as well as the material surroundings.

16. For, an appreciation of values of every nature should be taken into consideration by the body.

17. Ready for questions.

Dairy is a relatively safe food

Someone pointed out that even in our crazy modern food economy, dairy farmers have to take much better care of their milk cows than meat farmers do of their animals. Meat animals are commonly finished with corn and soybeans, and would develop chronic health problems if they were allowed to become an old cow or pig.

Healthy cows produce more milk than unhealthy cows, so dairy farmers do what they can to make sure their herd is somewhat healthy. All things considered, even non-organic milk is an okay food.

What are the staples in your diet? Do you use grape juice? Dairy? What kinds do you use?

P.S. I currently only have one charred oak keg w/ spigot in stock. If you’d like a spigot-free barrel please let me know.

I might also have a black-band barrel. This was purchased from me maybe 3 or 4 years ago, but was never soaked. This customer unexpectedly got sick this spring after traveling. I soaked one of my new barrels, with galvanized steel bands, bought him a bottle of apple brandy, and traded him for the one he’d bought years ago. I’ll have to make sure the old black band barrel will still seal up, as the bands are a little loose… If it’s good, I’d let this one go for $40 + shipping. Let me know if you’re interested. The black banded barrels are a little more quaint than the galvanized steel barrels.
