What to Read?
Someone asked me how I decide to what to read these days, and I realized, at this point my process is so layered it is hard to replicate. I wrote a little about it here, but I kept thinking about the question. I recognize that with book sections in publications shrinking, with the reality that so many things get overlooked by larger publications, it's an issue for someone trying to expand their reading. So, all of this is to say I will explain my process, and some other options, in the hopes that some of this is helpful.
I've never stopped reading. In high school and college, I often went to the library and just scanned the shelves, until I found a few things that seemed good to me. Using libraries and/or sale books can make the outlay on this low enough that the invariable miss is less painful.
My particular areas of interest are romance and YA, particularly of a contemporary bent.
Book bloggers and columnists:
Note: This is just a sampling of folks, there are a lot out there (aka I love all the people I left off this list too.)
Wendy the Super Librarian - Wendy also does a semi regular roundup of romance blogs on Twitter using #RomBkBlog.
Dahlia Adler writes about YA for several outfits including Buzzfeed. I also check LGBTQreads a lot.
I subscribe to WOCinRomance's Patreon.
Silvana Reyes writes trope roundup posts for Frolic, and is now also youtubing.
Also, Ana Coqui’s #RomBkLove events are full of people talking about their favorite books, and she keeps wonderful archives of all of the recommendations.
I’ll have more thoughts on this next week, but this is a good start.
