Let's Talk About Musicals

Hello, Hungry Readers,

I wrote a version of this post and then forgot to save it and I was too forlorn over such silliness to rewrite it.

So, here we are. If the news or the continued militarization of cities or both has been getting you down, may I suggest listening to a cast album of a musical is very distracting. Books, are great, I love books, but they are not always loud. And sometimes you need something to drown out the other voices in your head or something.

Also, as a note there are books of musicals. For example Saundra Mitchell wrote this delightful novelization of the musical “The Prom”. Currently not all musicals get novelizations, but I think they should. And not just because I want to write one. (Call me, Broadway/West End/Regional Theater!)

I recently discovered that there was a musical version of the Great British Bake Off, and this has made me incredibly happy. If you are in the US and your library does Freegal, the entire cast album is on there. If you are elsewhere, it is on quite a few streaming services also.

As we head into the end of the year, for all the things that does and doesn’t mean, there’s a lot of rushing. Pausing to enjoy a musical, whether you take 90 minutes and listen to the whole thing, or just catch it in snippets as you race about, a little singing might take you to another place for a bit.

In other news, over on the blog I did a post in defense of grief in romance.

Happy reading!
