Always Have a Book On Your Phone
This may sound weirder in these pandemic times when a lot of us are spending more time at home, but I highly recommend this idea. Obviously, a phone has a smaller screen than an ereader or even, what are they called, um, paper books, but hear me out. I did this often in pre-pandemic times, because sometimes you ran out and were somewhere without your ereader (horror!) and ran into an unexpected wait. More likely I would be somewhere it was considered odd to have an ereader. No one cared in line at the grocery store. But well, they do look at you funny at say hockey games or sitting at bars. I obviously only read during the twenty minute period breaks at hockey, but people get very concerned about your behavior when you do that.
The good or bad thing about our current culture is that people do think you are probably too phone obsessed if you stare at your phone at the bar or at a hockey game, but they assume you are a sad workaholic, not a person who needs an intervention. Or so I assume, because only once has anyone tried to convince me I should stop looking at my phone, and the number of people who thought I should talk to them instead of reading my book or ereader is larger than that.
But even on the couch or wherever you find yourself more often these days, I find having a book be one of the things I could be doing on my phone useful. As in, I could play another round of this game or read. I could refresh Twitter one more time or read. I could check Facebook or read. And sometimes I pick read. So my book numbers are staying high right now. And an app on my phone helpfully tells me I am still spending a lot of time on social media. But I am also reading. So, it does wonders for me, my reading, and for my TBR pile. And it turns out all of those things make me a happier person.
