🥇 Library Champion Newsletter | Let's put a smile on that face 😁
Library Champion,
Whether we like it or not, Amazon is everywhere. It began in the late 90s as just an online book store and has grown to permeate our lives in one way shape or form. Even the images I share in this newsletter are hosted by a website that gets its hosting from Amazon.
Check our this chart to get a glimpse into this:
Needless to say, Amazon is not going anywhere anytime soon. With that said, you can quickly and easily give a portion of your purchases on Amazon to a charity of your choice. AmazonSmile is a simple way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. AmazonSmile is available at smile.amazon.com on your web browser and can be activated in the Amazon Shopping app for iOS and Android phones.
When you shop with AmazonSmile, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added benefit that AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. You can choose from over one million organizations to support.
I use Amazon to buy DVDs for the library as well as office supplies and more. Here is a snapshot of my impact:
The proceeds you generate are donated to your charity of choice quarterly. As you can see, it adds up!
You can begin by going to smile.amazon.com/charitylists or tap Charity Lists on the "Programs & Features" menu in the Amazon Shopping app on your mobile phone. From there, you can search for a charity:
For users of Google Chrome, you can add the SmileAlways extension that will redirect you every time to smile.amazon.com. For users who do not use Chrome, you can simply bookmark smile.amazon.com and visit it when making your purchase.
Here is one book I am reading and a book that I just bought for the library’s collection.
I am continuing my way through A Promised Land. It is not a short or quick read. When I am not reading that, I am watching the TV adaptation of Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes series. I am working through season 2 and began reading the book Mr. Mercedes. It is the first in the Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King.
A book we bought today that you should borrow:
The Happiest Girl in the Worldby Alena Dillon
(Adult fiction, women, friendship, sports)
When she’s six years old, Sera Wheeler thinks gymnastics is fun. Then her YMCA instructor tells her mother that Sera has a gift and could be an elite gymnast. She and her new friend Lucy get closer to their dreams of the Olympics when they are invited to train at a camp run by a gymnastics power couple. At camp, Lucy has some bad stomach pain, so Dr. Eddie Levett comes to the cabin to treat Lucy. The visit is the start of Eddie’s long-term abuse of Lucy. Lucy tries to report him several times, but none of the adults will listen to her. Desperate to keep her Olympic dreams alive and to prove that her family’s time and monetary sacrifices were worth it, Sera turns on Lucy and their friendship fractures.
Bottom line: Never underestimate the power of a group of women. Fierce, thoughtful, and dramatic--this is a story of true courage.
