World of Smallville #2 (May 1988)
Superman is still reeling from the revelation that his earthly parents apparently used to live in a sordid soap opera. As related in Smallville #1, when she was young and hot Ma Kent actually got married to a rich guy named Dan Fordman while believing that Pa Kent had been killed by Japanese soldiers. When Fordman was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he asked the not-dead-after-all Pa to take over being Ma’s husband for him. Pa feels conflicted by this request, and things are further complicated by Fordman’s sister Eliza, who thinks Ma is a skank who only married the guy for his money.
Eventually, Fordman dies and when the will is being read, it’s revealed that Ma willingly gave up her husband’s massive fortune and the only thing she inherited was a farm – you know, the Kent farm. Where Superman grew up. Which I’m pretty sure other comics state belonged to Pa Kents’ family, but whatever. Anyway, then we get a retelling of the “Kents finding Superbaby’s rocket” scene from Man of Steel #1, with some additional info about Ma Kent’s non-functional uterus. Just what I always wanted to know.
Superman is slightly traumatized by all these revelations and goes play Doctor Manhattan on the moon for a while. Then he returns to Smallville and hugs his parents, and also Lana Lang who has randomly showed up.
Characted-Watch:
I was wrong about that Sal lady: she’s not Pa’s stepmom, she’s the widow of Pa’s dead brother Harry. Also, Dr. Whitney (the secret Manhunter agent living in Smallville) shows up in flashbacks and we’ll learn more about his tampering with the town’s babies in the next issue. In fact, Lana’s appearance at the end is probably just an excuse to segue into that plot.
