SUPPORTERS ONLY: Superman: The OTHER Animated Series (Part 1)
The 1988 Superman cartoon series by Ruby-Spears is interesting to me because it has several elements from our beloved '86 to '99 era, like the fact that Lex Luthor is a rich fat cat instead of a guy in a power suit, but it also has things in common with the Silver Age Superman comics, like the fact that it's silly as hell. Seriously, this stuff is way wackier than I remembered from half-paying attention to it while gorging on Froot Loops as a kid. Prompted by a suggestion from our Super-Patron Bheki Latha, I'm watching all thirteen episodes of this show and I'm going to tell you about them.
Episode 1: "Destroy the Defendroids"
The first episode is written by our old pal Marv Wolfman, and if you think that means it's gonna have the same gritty, realistic tone of his Adventures of Superman comics, the first scene makes it clear that you're waaaay off. It starts with Superman and Lois Lane flying together as in Superman: The Movie, for no reason, like that's just something they do every day. Speaking of the movie, one of the best things about this show is that it uses a version of the Superman theme by John Williams on the intro. I wonder if Superman wipes Lois' memory with his magic lips after each flight?
