Superman #5 (May 1987)

Superman #5 (May 1987)
“Superman vs. The Huge-Ass Robot Mummy,” Part 1 of 2. Not the actual title, but it should have been. Lois Lane and Clark Kent are covering an archeological excavation in South America which unearthed some pretty advanced technology from 100,000 years ago. There’s practically a whole Mac store down there. In poking around with the technology, they wake up a giant mummy that shoots eye lasers.
Clark separates from the group as they escape from the mummy and fights it for a while, but eventually gets knocked out. The issue ends when we find out that this massive monster that can fly and shoot lasers is actually *gasp* a robot!
Character-Watch:
We finally meet two essential Daily Planet staffers: Alice (a chubby intern) and Whit (a bald guy with a white mustache who doesn’t speak much but is always on the background). Alice would get her own spotlight issue a few years later, in which it’s revealed that she’s been living in the Daily Planet supply closet. We never learned Whit’s backstory, but he’s probably a sex offender.
Plotline-Watch:
Superman and Batman Hate Each Other: At the beginning of the issue, Clark receives an unmarked package at the Daily Planet offices. He’ll forget about this package for several months, but eventually Superman will have to ask Batman’s help for figuring out who sent it, which will vastly improve their relationship (at least until they beat the crap out of each other in Frank Miller’s future).
WTF-Watch:
Did I mention that in this issue Superman has a wet dream about Wonder Woman? Because in this issue, Superman totally has a wet dream about Wonder Woman. The comic starts with the moment the two met at the end of the Legends miniseries, when they fought together against Darkseid’s giant robot dogs. Then they start making out and Superman wakes up on a sticky bed. It has nothing to do with the rest of the issue.
