Metropolis Mailbag: Army of Darkness?

Army of Darkness was the first thing I thought of when I saw Jimbo's latest screw up (The Gate was second), but since AoD came out a few months after this comic, was it a case of great minds thinking alike or are they both tributing something else?

When Don pointed out the Army of Darkness similarity I figured it HAD to be a tribute to that, but you're right, the movie came out months after this comic. Now I don't know what to think. Here's the scene we're talking about, by the way (October 1992):
