Action Comics #594 (November 1987)
Metropolis’ other superhero, Booster Gold, is running a smear campaign about Superman, putting out “Superman sucks” posters and insulting him in the press. This apparently isn’t getting Superman’s attention quickly enough, so Booster simply kidnaps Mayor Berkowitz’ daughter. Superman shows up to rescue the girl, and Booster beats the crap out of him. I’ll remind you that Booster’s powers are literally just a shiny suit that shoots energy and having lots of money.
Booster is seriously about to murder Superman when the real Booster shows up. Turns out the other guy is a robot created by Lex Luthor that has a tiny bit of kryptonite inside, hence its ability to make Superman its bitch. The story continues in Booster Gold #23, where Booster saves Superman’s ass, and then the two fight another guy Luthor sent to retrieve the kryptonite. Booster later gets revenge on Luthor (for trying to frame him for Superman’s murder) by stealing his date during a party.
Character-Watch:
Booster is perhaps best known for being a member of the Justice League International, which at this point was less of a superhero team and more of an improv comedy troupe. Superman would also join the team years later (when they weren’t funny anymore), becoming Booster’s teammate. Booster will continue showing up in Superman comics from time to time, mainly because he was created by Dan Jurgens – in fact, it was Booster who came up with the name “Doomsday” for Superman’s killer.
Plotline-Watch:
Superman Hates Batman: The issue opens in Gotham City, where Superman gives Batman that scrapbook he got in the mail back in Superman #9 and asks him to find out who sent it to him, in return for having helped Batman with that vampire case. Meanwhile, Robin (Jason Todd) fangasms all over Superman’s cape and gets his autograph.
Qurac My Love: Fake Robo-Booster calls out Superman for invading a foreign country in Adventures #427 and risking causing a war. He does have a point. Who gave Superman permission to go around disarming countries? What is this, Superman IV?
Luthor’s Kryptonite: Apparently the kryptonite Luthor got in Superman #2 is running out, since he actually sent someone to retrieve the chunk he used this time. Remember when he was shooting kryptonite bullets like he didn’t give a fuck?
