The bad ads I'll never fully research

Different format, same absurd advertisements.

Only a handful of the ads I save to investigate later end up being worthy of full write-ups. So I figured I’d experiment with a mid-month issue that shares a few that are fun to look at, but not worth reading about:

An image of a computer telephony board, wearing a trenchcoat and holding a cigar. The headline says "Look no further!" and then lists all the features of the telephony board.
Byte Nov 1997

Because back-alley deals with guys smoking cigars and selling computer hardware out of trenchcoats must surely generate feelings of trust and reliability.

A woman with a streak of grey hair, dressed in a lab coat, and screaming. The headline reads "The Bride of Surgenstein"
PC World 1984

I actually already did an issue on Computer-Mate Inc but didn’t find this ad until later, which fits in perfectly with the rest of their convoluted messaging and product descriptions.

A comic book style drawing of a superhero swinging a "multi-function board" at a computer monitor. There are long-winded descriptions of "cable monsters" making everything too complicated.
PC World 1984

To be fair, I kind of love this one (ignoring the gratuitous number of distinct fonts). I really need to explain in writing somewhere what I mean when I say “bad ads,” which is rarely a black-and-white repudiation.

A woman is standing, facing away from the camera. She is wearing short shorts, high heels, and a short sleeved t-shirt, while holding some sort of computer hardware above her head and turning to look back at the camera.
PC World 1983

Just standing, facing a wall, holding a computer peripheral overhead, as one does.

A hodge podge of random images and copywriting, there is a man jumping a bicycle over a gap, some sort of skeleton in the background, a CD, a person typing on a computer, and there are slashes on the page with "LEOPTICS" written in the space behind or underneath the slashes.
Byte Nov 1997

Lest you think I’m unfairly dunking on the copywriting of non-native English speakers living a “diversified life in the multi-media,” I direct your attention to the skeleton in the background.

That’s it! Let me know if you enjoy this format and would like me to keep it up going forward. I'm also going to do a better job of explaining what I mean by "bad ads" on the signup page and maybe linking to that in the header of each issue, starting with the next one. Until then!
