What happened this week

This week's record kept coming back to one theme: oversight getting dismantled or dodged, often in plain sight. The Federal Housing Finance Agency's Director Bill Pulte slashed his own inspector general's budget to $20 million, enough to force 70-80% staff cuts and end the watchdog's capacity to investigate mortgage and bank fraud. The Justice Department filed a misconduct complaint against nearly the entire federal bench in Minnesota over judges' comments to the New York Times about Operation Metro Surge, and asked that they be pulled off any case involving DHS. And at the National Science Foundation, $1.4 billion in congressionally appropriated research money sat unspent on White House orders, headed instead toward administration priorities Congress never approved for it — a move that echoed the State Department's separate decision to reroute $52 million in Ukraine-earmarked military aid to Latin America over a standing congressional hold.

Local and state stories carried their own weight. ICE posted, then pulled within days, 33 internal reviews finding substandard medical care in detainee deaths. The Eugene Police Department tried to charge a local outlet $2.68 million to process misconduct records on two officers. Marin County's sheriff kept feeding license-plate data to out-of-state and federal agencies despite a 2022 settlement promising to stop. Tennessee botched an execution so badly the governor paused all others for the year. South Carolina's Arts Commission board overruled its own review panel to deny grants to two LGBTQ+ groups. And the DOJ opened two more fronts in its civil-rights push, suing Maryland over its police mask ban and finding UCLA Law guilty of race discrimination — its third law school target so far.
