What happened this week

This was a week dominated by immigration enforcement violence and a widening press crackdown. ICE agents pepper-sprayed protesters in Broadview, Illinois and an activist monitoring a courthouse arrest in Meriden, Connecticut; shot and wounded a Venezuelan DoorDash driver in Austin; and injured a U.S. citizen they mistook for a fugitive in Evanston. A whistleblower report described hundreds held in overcrowded, unsanitary Florida detention facilities, and a federal judge issued a permanent injunction finding ICE subjected detainees at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan to unconstitutional conditions, including sleeping upright or beside toilets. DHS and ICE also moved to deport a Peruvian detainee to the Central African Republic in defiance of an appeals-court ruling, requiring an emergency midnight order to stop it — while a sweep across three Massachusetts towns drew allegations of racial profiling and 25 habeas corpus petitions. Meanwhile, the White House escalated its fight with the press: it stripped CNN of its pool assignment, President Trump called CNN and MS NOW "treasonous" over UN coverage, Florida's pension board sued The New York Times for internal records on its Israel-Hamas coverage, and the administration aired a taxpayer-funded ad glorifying Trump weeks before the midterms.

The week also brought a string of findings on money and oversight. A financial disclosure showed Trump made over 1,100 stock trades in July touching companies his administration regulates, and HHS Secretary Kennedy disclosed $4 million in book advances from a friend's MAHA-linked publisher. The Justice Department dismissed more than 50 decades-old school desegregation consent decrees, USDA left its congressionally created Advisory Committee on Minority Farmers frozen and dormant, and Trump sent Congress an $810 million "pocket rescission" timed so lawmakers couldn't act on it. A GAO audit found ICE wasted tens of millions on unplanned detention expansion, Texas's DPS failed for about a year to forward tens of thousands of voter registrations to counties, CMS canceled ACA coverage for 760,000 people over an undisclosed fraud process, and a Rikers Island oversight report tied four 2026 deaths in custody to skipped supervisory rounds — a failure the same board had flagged in each of the three years before.
