This week in Stamford: 100-foot World Cup mural, live jazz at Harbor Point, pop-up Mahjong at the Diner

!Stamford Pulse

Happy Monday.

The World Cup is here, and Stamford is leaning all the way in. Henkel wrapped their Elm Street headquarters in a six-story mural of the U.S. Men's National Team, visible from I-95. Stamford Downtown launched a six-week "Summer of Soccer" watch party series across the district.

Best for families this week: free live jazz near the Splash Pad on Wednesday at 6 PM (Harbor Point Triangle Park, 7 Harbor Point Road South) and free Open Flow Yoga on Tuesday at 6 PM in the same park.

Here's what's in this week's Pulse:

  • Henkel's massive World Cup mural and downtown's Summer of Soccer
  • Marcella Barrios named Stamford Teacher of the Year
  • Pop-up Mahjong at the Stamford Diner on Wednesday
  • Drop The Mic storytelling night for Next Girl Up on Thursday
  • Palace Theatre and Fairgate Farm on the horizon

Let's get to it.

The Week in Stamford

Henkel Wraps Headquarters With 100-Foot U.S. Soccer Mural. Henkel, the consumer goods manufacturer at 200 Elm Street, installed a 100-by-60-foot building wrap featuring Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Chris Richards, and Tim Weah, each depicted at roughly 30 feet tall. Phil Schaffer, Henkel's Corporate Senior VP, said the company "wanted to go big" for the World Cup. The wrap is visible from I-95.

Stamford Downtown Launches "Summer of Soccer". Stamford Downtown President Michael Moore kicked off a six-week watch party series running through July 19. Restaurants and bars across the district are hosting match-day viewing events with food and drink specials. Full lineup at stamford-downtown.com.

Marcella Barrios Named Stamford Teacher of the Year. Barrios, an eighth-grade math teacher at Rogers International School, will represent the district as Stamford's nominee for the 2027 Connecticut Teacher of the Year. Mery Lopez of Hart School was named Paraeducator of the Year.

Teachers Union Pushes Back on Layoffs and Reassignments. The Stamford teachers union called for a reversal of what it described as "the outgoing administration's unexplained staffing shifts and pay cuts," including involuntary transfers into special education roles teachers say they are not trained for. The Board of Education has not publicly addressed the scope of the changes ahead of the 2026-27 school year.

Stamford Business Beat

McDonald's at 1103 East Main Street Seeks Second Drive-Thru Lane. The restaurant has been here roughly 50 years. The proposal would double vehicle capacity from 11 to 23 spaces: at peak lunch, 18 cars queue with traffic backing onto East Main. Attorney Raymond Rizio filed the request; the Planning Board voted unanimously on June 9 to send it to the Zoning Board. (Patch)

North Stamford Split-Level Listed at $1.049 Million. 208 Thornridge Drive: 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 2,830 square feet on one acre near the New Canaan border. Built in 1960. (Patch)

Green Building Requirements Gain Resident Support. Stamford residents voiced support for new requirements involving solar panels, green roofs, and tree protection for new construction. (Stamford Advocate)
