October 2025 Spooky Edition!

Like the regular newsletter, but spookier. (But mostly like the regular newsletter.)

Margaret's Spooooooky Monthly News

It's October (nearly November) and the weather has finally broken (for the most part). I am, as I write this, wearing long sleeves, and the air conditioner isn't even on.

Here at Nearly Monthly News Headquarters, October has been a mixed bag of creative work, administrative work, and Hades II coming out.

But given that I haven’t defeated Chronos yet, time marches on. And so, on to the news!

From My Desk

Personal work continues apace, but nothing ready for public announcement yet.

I do have news I should be able to tell you about in the next few weeks though, so… stay tuned for that?

Things I'm Reading and Watching

This month's book group selection was The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. We learned from the introduction to one edition that (according to Stevenson) the proper pronunciation of the Doctor's name is supposed to be "Jee-cle." We all agreed that was bonkers and then promptly caught ourselves shifting our pronunciation. You’re welcome, RLS.

I suppose it's nice to have a surprise in a hundred-plus-year-old book where we all know the twist. “Jekyll and Hyde” has become such a cultural shorthand, it’s easy to forget that contemporary readers didn’t know what was coming.

Other books this month were Silver and Lead, the latest book in the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire, and Positive Obsession, a cultural biography of Octavia Butler by Susana M. Morris.

From the Cutting Room Floor of the Duolingo Dystopia

Oscar has a theory as to why Zari and her cat are no longer living together:

Oscar, mustachioed art teacher from Duolingo says, "Are there no chairs in your house?" in French and Spanish.
Lack of chairs = lack of laps = lack of cats?

And That's the Nearly Monthly News!

Is there anything you've read/seen spoiler free that most people don’t get to experience that way? Was it a good experience, or did you wish someone had given you a heads up? Drop me a line! Otherwise, I hope all your scares are of the Halloween variety and all of your weather is appropriately seasonal. See you next month!
