Margaret's Nearly September Nearly Monthly News

Is it fall yet? No? Sigh...

Well, it's officially fall. And while I can't say the LA weather is giving much indication of turning anytime soon, I persist in optimism that cooler days are ahead. (I don't tolerate heat well. I realize this is not great for someone living in southern California. And yet, I do love living here.)

From my Desk

My work on the show I'm not allowed to admit I'm working on is officially concluded, and I'm actively looking for my next gig in the meantime. Hopefully one of the lines I have in the water will work out, and then I can resume making cryptic updates about some new project. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, I'm working on some spec scripts and making an effort to get back into the habit of writing and submitting short fiction again.

What I'm Reading and Watching

Somehow, despite the various "to be read" piles all over my apartment, I still occasionally find myself in airports with nothing to read. And when that happens, the airport bookstore comes to the recuse. Most recently, I picked up a copy of The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien while waiting for my flight in Pittsburgh. I read the title short story years ago, and the full collection does not disappoint. The Vietnam Era was before my time, but I'm fortunate to have thoughtful veterans from that time and others in my life, and this book felt like a glimpse into their world, even if it only served to confirm the only way to understand war is to live it.

Covid kept me out of the movie theater this month, but did keep me on my couch for a while, and I took the opportunity to bask in some of my favorite non-one-hour-drama television: Taskmaster and The Great British Baking Show have new series airing now, as do Jeopardy and Dimension 20.

From the Cutting Room Floor of the Duolingo Dystopia

My Spanish-in-French studies continue. This month, Zari appears to be living in a very specific genre of cozy telenovela.

Zari--hijab-wearing teenaged K-pop fan of Duolingo--says, "I don't live with my cat now," in French and Spanish.
What’s the cat drama? I have to know!!

And That's the Nearly Monthly News!

Please, tell me it feels like fall where you are. (Or, my condolences on the coming summer to my Southern Hemisphere friends?) My local Trader Joe's has put out decorative gourds, but I feel like believing in the imminent arrival of Spooky Season is an act of faith that rivals the effort needed to summon the Great Pumpkin itself. Either way, drop me a line. Or just quietly sit with me as we wait for cooler weather, and I'll see you next time!
