Margaret's NMN - August 2026

World Con! A lot of movies! And of course, the Duolingo Dystopia

What’s this? The Nearly Monthly News is out before the last day the month? Well, it’s going to be a busy weekend, so I figured I should write and send this while I had a minute.

What’s keeping me so busy about this weekend? I’m glad you asked!

Where’s Margaret Now?

Come see me at World Con! Either in person in Anaheim or virtual memberships are still available. Here’s my schedule, in case you want to see me opine. (All times PDT)

From my Desk

Batman: Caped Crusader has been getting amazing reviews, and I couldn’t be more proud of our team.

(I also confess, every time this guy says, “What the fuck?!?” it’s giving me life.)

Link to @Omn1Media’s reaction video Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 episodes 3 and 4 (Spoilers ahoy, obviously.)

Otherwise, this has been a summer of what my economist friend calls “work for labor,” which is to say, doing work in the hopes of creating the opportunity to be hired to do more work. It keeps me busy, but unfortunately leads to vague updates like this one.

What I’m Reading and Watching

Got back to the cinema in August with a vengeance. Here are my largely meaningless capsule reviews of what I’ve seen:

The Odyssey (IMAX, even without 70mm, proved sufficiently epic)

Spider-man: Brand New Day (Half the cast of The Odyssey, plus Florence Pugh)

Cookie Queens (Is Girl Scouting just a front for a giant cookie company? The jury is still out.)

Hadestown: The Musical (Just like seeing it in the theater, but with a better sound mix)

The Samurai and the Prisoner (One’s a samurai. One’s a prisoner. Together, they fight crime! No, really. They do.)

Six: The Musical, Live! (Remember kids, they can’t behead you if you’ve got an “of” in your name)

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (Did I like it? Yes. Do I understand it? Not really. Is that a problem? Nope!)

And that was my month at the movies!

From the Cutting Room Floor of the Duolingo Dystopia

The pain, it is real.

Falstaff, blue scarf-wearing brown bear of Duolingo says, “This champagne is horrible” in French and Spanish

Perhaps this means Oscar wasn’t missing out on much last month.

And That’s the Nearly Monthly News!

If you’re going to be at World Con, drop me a line so I can see you there! If not, the Nearly Monthly News will be back next month! Until then, stay well.
