Imo kidnap: Police locate suspected camp, but explosives slow the rescue

OWERRI, October 6, 2026

Five days after gunmen attacked two buses on the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, the army, DSS and police are still combing forest to reach the abducted prospective NYSC members. The buses were carrying passengers from Ibadan toward orientation camps in the South-East and South-South.

The Defence Headquarters said 20 passengers were abducted and 10 people, including eight prospective corps members, were rescued. Other reports put the number still held at 19 or 20, and police have not given an exact figure. Imo's Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, said drones helped locate the suspected camp, which is reportedly mined with improvised explosive devices. Extra tactical teams have been deployed and the Inspector-General has sent a Deputy Inspector-General to coordinate.

The Punch reports that the kidnappers have lowered their ransom demand from ₦50 million to ₦5 million per person, about ₦100 million for 20 people. That figure comes from the paper's reporting and has not been confirmed by police. Peter Obi has called for the victims' immediate, safe rescue, and Oyo State is working with Imo on their release.

Why It Matters: Young people travelling on a major South-East expressway were seized during a national orientation cycle. Explosives around the camp mean a raid carries risk to the hostages, so families should expect a slow, careful operation rather than a quick resolution.

Uzodimma: APC governors ready to campaign once Tinubu is back from leave

OWERRI, October 5, 2026

Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, briefed President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence on Sunday and said the governors are ready to begin campaign activities. He told reporters the forum kept working while the President was away on working leave.

At home, Uzodimma swore in 20 Permanent Secretaries on Friday, October 2, charging them on discipline and productivity, and, in a report dated October 1, presented 1,000 households as first beneficiaries of a Zero Hunger Agricultural Empowerment Programme. A Sun headline dated today also reports that he has approved recruitment of 6,030 teachers; we have not yet seen the full report and will follow it.

Why It Matters: The 2027 campaign season is shifting from planning to the field, and a South-East governor sits at the head of the ruling party's governors' bloc. Watch how that plays against Obi's strength in the zone.

Soludo government urges voters to reject Obi and NDC; Obi's camp fires back

AWKA, October 5, 2026

The Anambra State Government, through its official X account run by Governor Chukwuma Soludo's new media office, told APGA supporters on Monday to resist Peter Obi and the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of working against the party that first brought him to office. Obi's media team, POMR, replied that the administration should account for how state resources are managed instead of attacking him. The NDC's new media director said the party will “win big” in the state.

The exchange sits on top of a dispute over Anambra's debt. Information Commissioner Law Mefor said Obi left $123.77 million in external debt and disputed Obi's claim that ₦2.1 billion in ecological funds was left behind. Obi says the figure lumps together World Bank and IFAD programmes negotiated through the Federal Government, mixes approved, drawn and outstanding sums, and that his administration left no unpaid salaries, pensions or contractors. He also ruled out seeking another term as governor.

APGA endorsed President Tinubu's re-election in July, following Soludo's own declaration of support in 2025.

Why It Matters: Anambra is Obi's home state and Soludo's political base, which makes it the sharpest test in the zone of whether a sitting governor's machinery or a former governor's personal following carries more weight in 2027. The debt arguments are claims by each side and are not independently audited here.

Otti approves ₦1bn teachers' fund, orders reinstatement of those under 65

UMUAHIA, October 5, 2026

Speaking at the 2026 World Teachers' Day celebration on Monday, Governor Alex Otti approved a ₦1 billion appreciation fund for teachers and ordered the immediate return of previously disengaged teachers who are below the retirement age of 65. He directed that teachers whose salaries were withheld over verification problems be paid by the end of October.

He also told the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board to finish processing the 2021 and 2022 promotions and harmonise the process with the Head of Service, with the affected teachers promoted before the end of October. Otti said several concerns raised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers have been addressed and others are receiving attention.

Why It Matters: The orders come with end-of-October deadlines, which gives teachers and the NUT a clear date to hold the government to.

Otti says he is not at war with predecessors over Osisioma flyover

UMUAHIA, October 3, 2026

In a statement from his media adviser, Otti rejected claims that he abandoned the “Okezuo Abia” flyover built under Okezie Ikpeazu at Osisioma Ngwa on the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, after a pothole developed on a section and motorists began avoiding one lane. On October 1 he also said reconstruction of the Uratta and Old Express Roads in Aba would begin this month, and that Hilton is planning to come to Abia while Radisson Blu has a presence in Aba through the Enyimba Hotel redevelopment. On October 3 he constituted the Abia Labour Party's 2027 governorship campaign council.

Why It Matters: Road quality on the Aba–Port Harcourt corridor is a daily cost for traders. The flyover row and the October road start give readers two things to check against what actually happens on the ground.

Mbah rules out any shift in National Sports Festival date

ENUGU, October 5, 2026

The National Sports Commission has commended Governor Peter Mbah's commitment to hosting the 23rd National Sports Festival, tagged Coal City Games Enugu 2026. Mbah said the dates are fixed and that facilities will be ready before the opening ceremony. At the Awgu Games Village, work is under way on a 1,000-bed hostel, indoor and outdoor courts, a FIFA-standard football pitch and an eight-lane athletics track. The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is being rebuilt with a new pitch and track, upgraded stands, changing rooms, floodlighting and access-control systems.

The reports we reviewed do not state the opening date, so we have left it out.

Why It Matters: Hosting a national festival is a large logistics and security test for the state, and the venues under construction are a public measure of whether the timetable is real.

2,101 prospective corps members sworn in at Awgu

AWGU, October 5, 2026

Governor Mbah presided over the swearing-in of 2026 Batch C Stream prospective corps members deployed to Enugu: 2,101 in all, made up of 983 men and 1,118 women. He urged Nigerians to build a country that earns young people's loyalty and makes migration a choice rather than an escape route.

Why It Matters: The Enugu camp is proceeding normally while the Imo abduction involves travellers heading to similar camps, so expect scrutiny of how corps members move to and from camp across the zone.

Ebonyi Labour Party urges restraint over Umahi–Obi exchange

ABAKALIKI, October 5, 2026

The Labour Party in Ebonyi State faulted Works Minister David Umahi over his recent remarks on Peter Obi, urging him to avoid exchanges that could strain relations between Ebonyi and Anambra. Umahi had said there was no area in which Obi was his superior and argued that it is not yet the South-East's turn to produce the President. The party, whose 2027 governorship candidate is Splendour Oko Eze, said the two states' ties rest on decades of trade and cultural exchange, and called on Umahi to focus on federal roads, naming the Enugu–Abakaliki Federal Highway and the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway. It also criticised the Vanco Flyover project in Abakaliki, alleging traders were displaced, and said Obi should not be blamed for decisions on the Abakaliki Street name in Anambra.

Why It Matters: Rivalry between two of the zone's best-known politicians is spilling into inter-state sentiment, and the party is trying to keep the argument on road conditions the Works Ministry controls.

Anti-graft agencies silent on BusinessDay's Umahi contract report

ABUJA, October 6, 2026

BusinessDay Investigations reported on September 25 that Reinforced Global Resources Limited, owned by Joshua Okoro, received ₦60.1 billion in 27 payments from the Federal Ministry of Works, had no traceable federal contracts before Umahi became minister, and that Okoro campaigned for Umahi in 2023. The paper says EFCC did not respond to calls or messages and that ICPC's spokesperson said he was unaware of an investigation and had received no petition. BusinessDay says Umahi, the ministry and Okoro did not respond to requests for comment before publication.

These are allegations in the newspaper's reporting; no agency has announced an investigation.

Why It Matters: Umahi is the Works Minister and a South-East politician, so scrutiny of ministry contracts bears directly on how federal road money is spent. Whether the agencies act, or Umahi responds, will be worth tracking.

NDC's Okorie flags off Ebonyi South senatorial campaign

ONICHA IGBOEZE, October 5, 2026

Linus Okorie, the NDC's Ebonyi South senatorial candidate, launched his campaign at his home in Onicha Local Government Area, promising to mobilise votes for Peter Obi. He listed water in Akaeze and Ishiagu and the completion of the Amasiri 2x60MVA transmission substation among his priorities.

Why It Matters: Campaign events like this show how the Obi-led NDC is building ticket-wide structures in a state governed by the APC.

Otolokpo monarch asks Oborevwori to extend road and protect farmers

OTOLOKPO, October 5, 2026

The traditional ruler of Otolokpo Kingdom in Ika North East, Obi Collins Alioma Ezenwali, thanked Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for completing the Boji Owa–Otolokpo road and asked him to extend it to Ute Elugwu, Egbudu Akan and Ejeme. He also asked for reconstruction of the badly deteriorated Otolokpo–Ute Ogbeje road, and raised concern over herders encroaching on farmland, calling on security agencies to protect farmers.

Why It Matters: Roads and farmer–herder friction are recurring pressure points across Anioma farming communities, and the monarch's public appeal is a direct request with a named list of roads.

Asagba of Asaba marks two years on the throne

ASABA, October 5, 2026

Governor Oborevwori congratulated the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, on his second coronation anniversary, crediting him with contributions to peace, unity and development in Asaba Kingdom. Azinge became the 14th Asagba in October 2024. On October 4 the state government also urged parents, schools and community leaders to be vigilant against child trafficking and exploitation.

Why It Matters: A routine anniversary, but it keeps the capital's traditional institution in the public eye ahead of a busy election season.

UNIEC Urges Federal Government to Rescue Abducted Corps Members in Imo State

ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire, October 6, 2026

A prominent member of the United Igbo Elders Congress (UNIEC) in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, and its National Life Patron, High Chief Ikechukwu Okwube (Udu Ego), Okigbo Nkpor, has called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts toward the immediate rescue of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Imo State last week.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Okwube expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity facing young Nigerians participating in the mandatory national service programme. He warned that continued attacks on corps members could erode public confidence in the NYSC scheme and discourage parents from allowing their children and wards to take part. He said the safety and welfare of corps members should be treated as a national priority, given their important role in promoting national unity, integration and development across the country.

Chief Okwube lamented what he described as inadequate protection for corps members, especially in areas considered vulnerable to criminal activities. He questioned why young people serving their country are often left exposed to danger while political office holders move about under heavy guard. “It is disturbing that corps members, who are engaged in national service, are not provided with adequate security guarantees. If the government can provide security for governors and other public officials who travel in long convoys of exotic vehicles accompanied by heavily armed personnel, it should do the same for the young graduates it posts to communities across the country,” he noted.

The UNIEC National Life Patron urged both federal and state governments to review existing measures and ensure that corps members' postings, movements and accommodation are properly protected. He stressed that no parent should have to worry about the safety of a child participating in a programme established to foster national cohesion.

Chief Okwube further appealed to security agencies to leave no stone unturned in securing the safe and unconditional release of the abducted corps members and bringing the perpetrators to justice. He maintained that protecting citizens, especially young people serving the nation, remains one of the primary responsibilities of any government. He concluded by calling for a comprehensive audit of the NYSC scheme nationwide to prevent future occurrences and rebuild public trust in the programme.

Why It Matters: The Imo abduction has drawn a response from Igbo elders abroad, widening the pressure on Abuja beyond the zone. The call for a nationwide NYSC audit puts a specific policy demand on the table.

INEC marks 100 days to 2027 elections; candidate list due October 10

ABUJA, October 6, 2026

INEC holds a World Press Conference and national stakeholders' meeting at 10am today at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, with Chairman Joash Amupitan expected to update stakeholders. The commission has set February 20, 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6, 2027 for governorship and state Assembly polls. Vanguard reports the final list of governorship and state Assembly candidates is expected on October 10, with some candidates awaiting clarity after the Supreme Court's recent ruling.

Why It Matters: The final candidate lists determine who appears on South-East ballots, including the contested tickets in Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi.
