Your 7AM briefing on Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, and the Igbo-speaking communities of Delta and Rivers.

Today's Headlines

  • Nigeria turns 66. President Bola Tinubu addresses the nation today as the Federal Government marks a deliberately low-key anniversary.
  • UNIEC to Igbo politicians: stop attacking each other, deliver the dividends of democracy. The elders name Gov. Charles Soludo and Works Minister David Umahi in their appeal over repeated attacks on Peter Obi.
  • Ebonyi turns 30 today, created on October 1, 1996 from parts of Enugu and Abia.
  • Abia's World Igbo Day was scheduled for September 29, with South-East governors and Igbo leaders expected.

Lead Story: Nigeria at 66, and a Low-Key Celebration

ABUJA, October 1, 2026 — President Bola Tinubu will address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast today, the centrepiece of the 66th Independence Anniversary. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said at the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee that the programme would be conservative, with emphasis on the sacrifices of the founding fathers and heroines.

The build-up ran from a World Press Conference on September 24 and a Juma'at service on September 25 to a church service on September 27 and an Independence Day public lecture on September 30. The SGF's office also said the anniversary gives the administration a window to showcase its reform agenda against the backdrop of the country's socio-economic challenges.

Why It Matters: For the South-East, Independence Day arrives in the middle of pre-2027 politics. Expect the President's broadcast, and the responses to it from South-East leaders, to be read through that lens.

Special Statement: UNIEC to Igbo Politicians

"A Kingdom Divided Against Itself Shall Not Stand"

Statement by the United Igbo Elders Congress (UNIEC) on the occasion of Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary

ASABA, October 1, 2026 — The United Igbo Elders Congress (UNIEC) has called on Igbo politicians to end the public attacks on one another and to direct their energy to delivering the dividends of democracy to Ndigbo.

In a statement marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary, the Congress said the spectacle of Igbo leaders trading insults in the media was doing the region no good at a time when its people are looking to their leaders for roads, security, jobs and hope.

The elders named two public officials in particular: the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, and the Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi. UNIEC expressed concern over what it described as their repeated public attacks on Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and appealed to both men to lay down the verbal combat.

"Our ancestors taught us that when brothers quarrel, strangers inherit the compound. The Holy Scriptures say it plainly: a kingdom divided against itself shall not stand. Igboland cannot afford to be that kingdom."

UNIEC stressed that it was not taking sides between parties or candidates. Every Igbo son and daughter, it said, has the right to hold and canvass a political position, and healthy debate on policy is welcome. What the Congress rejected was the personalisation of politics, the trading of insults and the use of public office to belittle a fellow son of the soil.

The Congress urged Igbo politicians, across every party, to:

  • Disagree on issues and ideas without disparaging persons.
  • Channel their energy into roads, security, jobs, schools, hospitals and markets for Igbo communities.
  • Present a united front when negotiating Igbo interests within the Nigerian federation.
  • Remember that their offices are held in trust for the people.

UNIEC said it would continue to engage leaders across party lines through its flagship initiative, Project Reposition Ndigbo, in the interest of equity, justice and unity.

Signed: H. E. Pastor Michael Obierika, BOT Secretary, United Igbo Elders Congress (UNIEC).

Editor's note: The publisher of The South East Insider serves as BOT Secretary of UNIEC and signed this statement. It is published in full as the Congress's own position and is not an independent news report. Governor Soludo and Minister Umahi were not approached for comment before publication. Their offices are welcome to respond and any reply will be carried.

Background & Analysis: The Public Exchanges UNIEC Is Reacting To

The elders' appeal follows a string of public exchanges between Mr. Obi and two prominent South-East figures. The record, as reported by national outlets:

Soludo and Obi. In November 2025, after winning a second term, Governor Soludo mocked Mr. Obi over the Labour Party's poor showing in the Anambra governorship election, calling him a "serial loser", according to Peoples Gazette. More recently, in June 2026, a statement from the governor's media adviser, Ejimofor Opara, said Mr. Obi's call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu was "a major slap on the Nigerian judiciary", Arise News reported. IPOB responded by accusing the governor of hypocrisy. Mr. Obi, for his part, earlier said he holds no grievance against Mr. Soludo and prayed for his success.

Umahi and Obi. Minister Umahi has repeatedly criticised Mr. Obi in media interviews. He dismissed the support around Mr. Obi as "AI politics" and said Mr. Obi "cannot face" him or the President, according to Arise News. He has also urged South-East voters to back President Tinubu in 2027, arguing that South-East votes alone cannot carry Mr. Obi to victory, The Guardian reported. Mr. Obi has turned down Mr. Umahi's challenge to a public debate on federal roads.

Context. Mr. Obi secured the NDC presidential ticket as the sole aspirant in May 2026, running with Rabiu Kwankwaso. Mr. Soludo has publicly backed President Tinubu, while Mr. Umahi is a member of the Federal Executive Council and has said he is campaigning for the President in the region.

Why It Matters: Igbo leaders are split across APGA, the APC and the NDC as 2027 approaches. Disagreement between parties is normal in a democracy. The elders' concern is tone: public insults between leaders from one region can harden divisions among ordinary supporters and crowd out the delivery of projects that voters say they want.

Regional Notes

Ebonyi @ 30. Ebonyi State marks 30 years since its creation on October 1, 1996, out of parts of Enugu and Abia. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki, the state NLC chairman, Egwu, said the state has recorded considerable progress in infrastructure and human-resource development and urged the government to keep improving the quality of life of citizens.

Abia: World Igbo Day. The Abia State Government scheduled its World Igbo Day celebration for Tuesday, September 29, with an inter-denominational service, a march-past and cultural displays by delegations from participating states. South-East governors and Igbo leaders were expected to attend.
