APC takes every council seat in Enugu

ENUGU, September 27–28, 2026

The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) declared the All Progressives Congress winner of all 17 local government chairmanships and all 260 councillorship seats in the September 26 council elections. ENSIEC chairman Prof. Christian Ngwu announced the chairmanship results on Sunday and issued certificates of return.

The margins were wide. In Aninri, Ugochukwu Nwanjoku polled 17,016 votes against 2,006 for his nearest rival; in Enugu South, Caleb Ani polled 71,335 against 1,311 for the NDC candidate. Ani credited Governor Peter Mbah's development record. State APC chairman Martin Chukwunweike said the party expects Tinubu, Mbah and APC candidates to be re-elected in 2027.

Why It Matters: In the September 2024 council polls the PDP won every chairmanship and councillorship seat in the state. The full reversal in two years shows how local government election results in Nigeria usually go in favor of the party in power.

Soludo–Obi debt dispute moves from claims to documents

AWKA, September 25–28, 2026

The Anambra government says eight external facilities tied to Peter Obi's 2006–2014 tenure total $123.77 million, and that $92.35 million was still unpaid as of June. It has released loan records and a separate document it says shows ₦363.381 million in salary entitlements left unpaid when Obi exited office.

Obi, now the NDC presidential candidate, rejects the label of debt "owed by Peter Obi." He says the funds were mainly multilateral programme financing, that he did not personally borrow from any lender or issue a bond, and that Debt Management Office records put the state's external debt at about $30 million when he left. He also says there is no rift with Governor Chukwuma Soludo and that he will not seek any governorship again.

On Sunday the Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation called for a truce between the two. Separately, ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo, Obi's 2023 campaign spokesman, said he was misled when he earlier defended Obi on the debt record.

Why It Matters: The dispute is now about whose accounting is right, not who is louder, and it is running inside the 2027 campaign. Readers should watch whether the state publishes the disputed breakdowns and whether Obi answers the documents.

Awka mourns pupil swept away by flood; Umeh seeks disaster-zone declaration

AWKA, September 27–28, 2026

Success Ezenwafor, six, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, died after a school bus was trapped by floodwater along the Nibo–Isiagu road in Awka South last Tuesday. Nine other occupants were rescued. Speaking at a thanksgiving service in Awka on Sunday, Governor Soludo mourned him and urged residents to manage runoff from their compounds, keep drains clear and plant trees. He said the state has spent tens of billions of naira on erosion control.

Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central, has asked the federal government to declare the district an ecological disaster zone after erosion swallowed houses in Awka.

Why It Matters: The tragedy has turned erosion from a budget line into a school-run safety issue. The question for the state is whether the response goes beyond appeals to residents.

28 human skulls and bones found in abandoned Isuochi forest camps

UMUAHIA, September 27–28, 2026

The Abia State Police Command says tactical teams raided suspected criminal camps in forests around Umuaku and Nneato in Isuochi, Umunneochi Local Government Area, and recovered 28 human skulls and bones it suspects belong to kidnapping victims. The suspects fled before the teams arrived, the camps were dismantled and no arrest has been made. Some remains were reportedly decomposed.

Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka said the raid falls under "Operation No Hideout for Criminal Elements in the State," directed by Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi. Police are working to identify the victims and have asked residents for information. Reports give the raid date as Saturday, September 26 or Sunday, September 27.

Why It Matters: No identities and no arrests yet. Families of people abducted along the Umunneochi corridor will be waiting for forensic identification, which is the step that matters most.

Akaeze flood: governor orders evacuation, government warns against politicising relief

ABAKALIKI, September 26–28, 2026

Governor Francis Nwifuru has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to evacuate, relocate and assess communities in Ivo and Ohaozara affected by flooding, and to coordinate with federal emergency agencies. The state's information commissioner, Ikeuwa Omebeh, cautioned opposition figures against exploiting victims' plight ahead of 2027.

The Akaeze flood struck on Tuesday night. SEMA's executive director, Clement Ovuoba, said more than 134 houses were affected along with farmland and livestock, and that no life was lost. Victims quoted by the media said the same. PDP governorship candidate Ifeanyi Odii and Rep. Nkemkama Kama have both visited and donated cash and relief items.

Why It Matters: Relief is already a campaign topic. The government's own assessment, not either side's donations, will determine how much help actually reaches the displaced families.

Editor's note: one Sun headline on the incident refers to recovering victims swept away, which does not match the SEMA and victim accounts above. We are treating no deaths as the confirmed position until that is resolved.

Uzodimma launches seedling scheme for 1,000 households

OWERRI, September 28, 2026

Governor Hope Uzodimma on Monday launched a "Zero Hunger Agricultural Empowerment Programme," distributing crop seedlings to 1,000 households in Owerri in partnership with Young Professionals for Tinubu. Beneficiaries are to plant near their homes and harvest within months. On Sunday he joined Archbishop Lucius Ugorji at Assumpta Cathedral for the Independence thanksgiving Mass, saying ordinary Nigerians' sacrifices have kept the country together.

Why It Matters: The scheme is small relative to Imo's population and is being delivered with a pro-Tinubu group, so it doubles as pre-election positioning. Coverage gap: we found no fresh Imo security incident in the last 48 hours, so none is reported here.

Ufuoma and Apia yet to surrender over deputy director's death

ASABA, September 28, 2026

Clemetine Ufuoma, Director of Basic and Secondary Education, and Clement Apia, driver to the Commissioner for Secondary Education, are yet to surrender over the death of Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a deputy director in the ministry. Although there are rumors that they have surrendered, the latest police statement we found, issued Monday, still listed them as wanted, and an official police confirmation of the surrender was not yet available at the time of writing.

Earlier, the Delta State Police Command said it had taken Commissioner for Secondary Education Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu and three other suspects into custody, bringing the number then held to five. Commissioner of Police Samuel Erale had urged Ufuoma and Apia to report without delay, and police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said their presence was required for the investigation.

The death followed an alleged confrontation at the ministry's office in Asaba, and police have referred to allegations of physical assault. Premium Times reports Ashibogwu has denied ordering or taking part in any assault and says Adeda had become violent. Accounts of what happened conflict. Delta workers had demanded an investigation, and the NLC shut the state secretariat in Asaba on Friday, according to PUNCH as cited by Premium Times.

Why It Matters: Custody and surrender are not findings of guilt, and the commissioner's account is on record. With the two named suspects now still at large, the case tests whether an investigation involving a serving cabinet member proceeds openly, and how the state government handles his position while it does.

UNIEC Position Paper: One Coast, Lopsided Ports

UNIEC calls on the Federal Government to rebuild and make functional all Midwest and Eastern ports

ASABA, For release September 29, 2026

The United Igbo Elders Congress (UNIEC), under its Project Reposition Ndigbo, has presented a position paper titled "One Coast, Lopsided Ports" following a National Executive Council meeting held at the Afrika4Jesus Mission House in Asaba. It calls on the Federal Government to reconstruct and make fully functional all ports in the Midwest and Eastern corridor.

In summary, the paper says Nigeria has seven seaports on an 853 km coastline, and that only three, Lekki, Apapa and Tin Can Island, all around Lagos, handle modern deep-draft shipping. It says the four ports serving the Midwest, South-South and South-East, namely Warri, Port Harcourt, Onne and Calabar, have channels of roughly 6 to 12 metres against the 16 metres modern ocean-going vessels need. UNIEC frames this as a standing disadvantage that raises the cost of every import and export for Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi and Delta's Asaba axis.

On cost to the people, the paper notes that cargo bound for Onitsha, Aba, Nnewi, Enugu and Owerri travels by road from Lagos, hundreds of kilometres of it on failing highways, which it says works against the region's manufacturers and exporters.

On the Ogun announcement, the paper cites a September 24, 2026 signing in Paris of MoUs between the Ogun State Government and DP World for a Gateway Deep Sea Port (4 km berth, 18 m draft) and a Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, projected to draw more than $7 billion in initial investment, with the President witnessing and pledging regulatory and infrastructure support, including a link to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. UNIEC says it does not oppose investment in Ogun; its point is that this is a private-led MoU rather than a federal contract, and that Abuja has offered it a level of visible, top-level backing the East has never received.

On the federal response, the paper says the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has announced plans to dredge Warri, Rivers, Onne and Calabar to about 16 metres, and that reports on September 27, 2026 say the Federal Government has approved modernisation of all four. UNIEC welcomes this but notes that earlier approvals on eastern ports have stalled, citing Calabar channel dredging as an open question for more than a decade. Its demand is delivery on a published timetable.

The paper also offers an Algerian comparison. On UNIEC's working figures, Algeria has 48.2 million people, 11 ports and a 998 km coastline, against roughly 230 million people, 7 seaports and 853 km for Nigeria. That works out to about 4.4 million people per port in Algeria against about 33 million in Nigeria, roughly seven and a half times as many.

Why It Matters: This is the position of an advocacy body, and the figures and events above are as stated in UNIEC's paper; the Ogun MoU and the federal dredging announcements were not independently checked for this edition. The paper's core ask is specific and testable: a published delivery timetable for the four eastern and Midwest ports.

Rivers Desk (Ikwerre / Igbo Communities)

Rivers Assembly backs state police amendment, 25–0

PORT HARCOURT, September 28, 2026

All 25 members present at Monday's plenary voted to endorse the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which provides a constitutional framework for state police services alongside the federal force. Speaker Martins Amaewhule said the bill also strengthens the National Assembly's role in setting minimum policing standards. The National Assembly transmitted the bill to the 36 state Houses of Assembly on September 16. Osun was the first to approve.

Section 9 of the Constitution requires resolutions from at least 24 of the 36 state assemblies before the bill can go to the President for assent.

Why It Matters: For South-East and Niger Delta communities living with kidnapping and armed-group violence, this is the reform most directly tied to local security. Ripples Nigeria ran a related headline about a court injunction over recognition of the Amaewhule-led Assembly; we could not confirm its date or status, so readers should check it.

Obi–Kwankwaso ticket visits Sokoto; diaspora voting bill gets a town hall

ABUJA, September 28–29, 2026

NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi and running mate Rabiu Kwankwaso visited the Sultan of Sokoto on Monday, according to Naija News. In a separate report, former SGF Babachir Lawal claimed that ADC candidate Atiku Abubakar sent him to ask Obi to serve as Atiku's running mate and that Obi declined; the claim is Lawal's and was not independently confirmed here.

Stakeholders also pressed for a diaspora voting bill at a News Central town hall on Monday, a live issue for Igbo communities abroad.

Why It Matters: Coverage gap: we found no verified Igbo-specific Abuja or diaspora story in the last 24 hours beyond these national items, so this desk is kept short rather than padded.
