Are you there God? It's-a me, Maria T.
Saturday, September 28
at the Pottery Gym (1319 North Randolph Street)
8:00 PM | $15 | Tickets
Saturday night's alright for getting fried, and this is the place for it. I love the chaos of a band announcing their first shows of the year with only a couple of months remaining.
A night of psych/noise heavy-hitters—dare I say legends—in the form of Sunburned Hand of the Man and Jeffrey Alexander, joined by a band of NYC experimental guys I don't know but sound good to my ears (Vague Plot) and locals ABACABA who use pseudonyms so if you know who they are, congrats, you’re more tapped into things than me.
Also, if you are wondering where the Pottery Gym is, it’s next to the Maas Building.
Saturday, September 28
at Kung Fu Necktie
7:00 PM | $12 | Tickets
This show will most likely win awards for punctuality with its early start time. I cannot imagine folks who have served time in bands such as the Bigger Lovers, Lefty's Deciever, the Dead Milkmen, and Wishniaks—just to name a view—would deign to run a show late.
Mark my words, it will be a night of Big Jangle topped with a nice slurry of fuzz. There will be songs with words and others will not have any lyrics. The guitar pedals? They will be excellent, regularly switched on, and oft discussed.
Wednesday, October 2
at Solar Myth
8:00 PM | $30 | Tickets
Improvising trio Weird of Mouth (Craig Taborn, Mette Rasmussen, Ches Smith) hop, skip, and triple axel their way across the jazz cosmos in their self-titled debut, which comes out this week (10/4). They all have some impressive resumes, the preview clips sound playful and aggressive, so this should be really fun to watch.
The great thing about these 1-act mid-week improv shows at Solar Myth is that you can expect them to be about an hour-ish long and there will most likely be chairs.
Sound Advice is a weekly newsletter highlighting upcoming concerts in the greater Philadelphia metro area. Expect 1-5 shows of note, written by yours truly and perhaps an occasional guest contributor or two, published on Thursdays.
Local concert listings can be found at the following websites because I am not a concert calendar:
