Sound Advice is a weekly newsletter highlighting upcoming concerts and music-related events in the greater Philadelphia area.
Expect 1-5 events of note (more or less) published weekly on Thursdays.
Listings are valuable ways of learning about what's happening, and Philadelphia has no shortage of them. That said, you're still at the mercy of how much information is (or isn't) provided. Algorithms, tags, and other tools are helpful to a point, but they lack spontaneity and capacity to pique a person's interest that only a preview can provide.
Around here we believe writing about music is important, and in a time when corporations dole out fractions of a penny to artists, it is invaluable. In particular, writing about and documenting our local music communities is necessary and vital to our creative survival.
The name comes from the previews section of the now-defunct Philadelphia City Paper, of which I was a contributor in the early 2000s. If you have a problem with this repurposing, we can settle it in the appropriate manner: a knife fight under the Gray's Ferry Bridge.
About Us
That would be me, Maria T. I have been a longtime participant in Philadelphia's music scene since the late 90s. I've written about music for the aforementioned CP, booked shows, photographed concerts for various outlets, hosted a radio program on WPRB 103.3 FM, and play music myself. You can learn more over at my website, Her Jazz (which happens to be Philadelphia's oldest music blog).
Support & Subscribe
Go see shows, buy an artist’s music and merch. It's really that simple.

My wish is to keep this newsletter free for all to read, but you can support this work by donating or with a paid annual subscription. Paid subscribers receive web access and occasional bonus content. Either way, your support is appreciated and offsets operational costs.
Disclaimer
There may be paid tiers, additional features, and changes to this newsletter's delivery methods in the future. The picks reflect the interests and opinions of the writers. There will be typos and errors. The shows may get canceled, moved to different days/locations/etc, shut down, or sell out. Bands may start late because of "punk time," you may run into your ex, or get hurt in the circle pit. We are not responsible for any of that. Please check the source website for details.
