New Year, New Platform
Substack has a Nazi problem
Happy New Year, folks. Thrilled for 2024, over here.
Did you know that Substack has a Nazi problem? Well, it does. I’m not down with White nationalism and I bet that you’re not, either, so I’m writing to inform you, loyal reader, that I’ll be migrating Soft Labor to Buttondown in the coming weeks. There’s nothing for you to do — just hang in with me, as you do — but in the interest of digital transparency, I wanted to let you know in advance.
I should have migrated ages ago, and I thank my former SFist editor, longtime friend, and OG Internet lodestar Eve Batey (whom you’ve been reading in Vanity Fair lately), for alerting me to this recent round of controversy. Accountability is a thing and the great thing about self-publishing — the reason I started tinkering with the Internet to begin with, in the 90’s — is that one can make choices about who one hangs out with online.
You’ll hear from me again soon — I’m working on a new essay that I’m looking forward to sending your way. Thanks for your readership and your support.
