PUCKFEST IN PHILLY (AND OTHER SHIT)
I'm playing in philly, i worte about jungle, about public space and some mixes
Hi, how’s it going? I’m back to tell you I’m playing a super exciting show in Philly and some other stuff I’ve been really obsessing on.
I got asked a few months ago by my friend Wirl if I’d be down to play in Philly, after hearing so many cool things from different sources of what the Philadelphia scene in regards to techno, vinyl and DIY raves.
Me and Wirl connected over Ani, over records and nerding out about music. We played a bag show back in March (?), it was a back3back with Blackberry Knuckleduster (Brandon E.), it was so fun, it was so weird and I got to connect with my crush that now became my beloved girlfriend. How sweet.
Something I like about playing with WiRl and their curation in regards to music is the idea of flux, of fringes, of doing it anyway. I feel their approach to mixing is very polished but also in harmony with noise. They let each track sit down after the other, sometimes in a way that’s very meditative, like a noise set.
Philly has something I’ve heard many times, from people that has lived there, been there there and I got to experience shortly two years ago when I went to the Philly version of Bash Back. The outlaw, non clubby, DIY scene of raves. Where there’s spots where mfs pull up with some okay equipment, maybe some shitty ass sounding speakers, but the vibes are right (at least for me, a fan of redlining, I’m sorry Tony): mfs getting drunk or high with no walls around, no tickets, fireworks, a firepit, etc. I’m excited for that sincerity, for that rejection of the snobbism of clubbing that took away the experimental aspect of this extremely neuro-ass-divergent ways of music. There’s pride in that shit I don’t take for granted.
There’s something so dumb yet so beautiful of playing two tracks at the same time, over eachother and find a harmony between them, or the sweet spot of chaos where more than a melody becomes a third secret little thing… not even mentioning the ecstasy of three, or four tunes playing at the same time giving birth to a whole atmosphere. I bet God created this world by fucking around with sounds, if you don’t believe me go take a nap at a forest anywhere.
I kinda hate, the pose of coolness that has taken over techno, house, drum and bass. I like to blame capitalism, I like to blame anti blackness and classism, to comodify experimental spaces for weirdness. I miss dusty dancing at some secret location.
Thought a lot about this this week when Rayna and I were chatting about the early jungle scene in NYC, it all started because she found some crazy archival material. Of one of the early jungle jams at Sarah D Roosevelt Park in 1998. And it was weird, it was on day time, with some uncs around, some mfs doing performance, other breakdancing, some nerd djing. Rayna and I favorite topic is culture as an experiment, this applies to so much stuff, but in regards of the work we’ve collaborated together in Voluminous Arts this applies to the life of trans people in electronic music. The outlawness of public space is so damn queer… (I might develop this thought in a future newsletter where I’ll be referencing three books I’m currently reading.) But when I see those early jungle parties in the NYC of the past I grieve a life that supposed to be and that was taken out of us. That was confined behind walls, behind the social media norm, behind the politics of coolness and cloutness. I miss a city that falls apart, but is in constant blossom by the people that inhabit their corners, parks, that is alive in its walls. Life supossed to be outside.
I bring this up, because I appreciate the effort the homies who are putting this fest in Philly are doing, I appreciate that about Philly: the effort in doing shit in the public space, or in weird places that aren’t an over priced club -regardless gentrification and anti black bullshit in public space is a never ending constant in this country, and where this country bring their fingers.- This is not a free party, but I appreciate the effort of three soundsystems, and djs playing records from different experimental scenes.
If you’re seeing this, and you’re in NYC I would absolutely love if you could come. I’ll be mixing bruxeria funk, leftfield detroit funky techno, house and drum and bass. Latinamerican salad of records all in vinyl.
Come on pull up this weekend to Philly.
