the girlies are fighting!?
A few weeks ago I went on one of Gabriel Willow’s fall migration walks in Prospect Park, which are one of my favorite ways to get out and see some birds. Gabriel is a font of seemingly infinite knowledge about the city and its creatures, and I learn something new every time we go. Each walk offers something different, all depending on which birds have happened to migrate over the city the previous night.
But this walk was particularly special. As we made our way into the Vale of Cashmere, the overgrown oasis that offers birds a place to drink, splash, and overall chill, we saw some of the least-chill birds of all time. That’s right, we saw some freaking hummingbirds!
Oh sorry, did you want photos of hummingbirds? Well they’re very small and I only have my dinky phone camera. But I took this photo because there WAS a hummingbird somewhere in the greenery so if you spot it, let me know.
My friend Hannah was the first to tentatively spot the hummingbird, pointing out its very long beak. Soon, the whole patch was swarming with tiny ruby-throated hummingbirds, which look like small green jewels with snow-white bellies. If you don’t love hummingbirds, please read Brian Doyle’s essay Joyas Voladoras and then return to this newsletter, forever changed. I return to that essay all the freaking time, for one of the most beautiful lists I’ve ever encountered, for a lesson in contagious wonder, for the reminder that we all churn inside.
Gabriel told us that the hummingbirds we saw were all female. They whirred around from flower to flower, and once, two looped together in the sky in what seemed like a dance. But apparently it was a fight over territory, over flowers, over something. The girlies were huffin’ and puffin’!
Two things can be true: I appreciate every creature I see in New York City, and also some creatures are simply more magical than others. This tiny, furious flock of hummingbirds was simply one of the most magical sights I’ve seen, for the impossibility of their bodies and their tremendously tiny fury. Hannah and I stayed to watch the hummingbirds for as long as we could as the rest of the group moved on, unable to tear ourselves away. And I proceeded to take some absolutely horrible photos to document this incredible experience.
This walk filled my cup of wonder for several stressful weeks. I feel so grateful to live on a planet and in a city with hummingbirds! Could you imagine if they did a season of RHONY with an all-hummingbird cast? These divas would throw fits the likes of which we have never seen before.

If you, too, want to see some birds, you’re in luck! We’re smack-dab in the middle of fall migration and you could probably go see a small and beautiful bird every day if that kind of thing strikes your fancy. Don’t miss Raptorama on Oct. 11 and the many bilingual (or even trilingual!) bird walks coming up with the NYC Bird Alliance. And if you’re into other creatures, too, October is quite literally teeming with can’t-miss events, including a series of classes on rats, pigeons, and cockroaches, ID-ing sparrows, a fungus festival, and a nature walk for Palestine.
Also, I’m teaching a virtual workshop in November with Workshops4Gaza! It’s called “Writing Alongside the Nonhuman,” and we’ll be reading some of my favorite nature writers to imagine a more ethical and collaborative writing practice around non-human subjects. You can sign up here; to register, simply donate $40 (or more) to the Sameer Project to support displaced families in Gaza. Thanks so much for reading, and see you next month!
If you’d like to help me offset the costs of hosting this newsletter, you can choose to pay a monthly subscription at a level of your choosing.
