thank god for pepper
Hello again! I am emerging from a terrible weekend spent largely in the animal hospital attending to my most precious creature, my beautiful babygirl Melon. She’s back home now and we’re awaiting test results. Please keep her in your thoughts.
Forgive the lack of transition, but I am now going to pivot to another creature named Pepper, who I had the privilege of meeting early this month. Pepper was one of the highlights of my March, and I hope they can be one of yours soon.

Pepper lives at Marine Park, which I visited for the first time in early March. It was very cold and the park was very smelly but I saw a great many sights, some of which I will include below. I didn’t bring my binoculars which was stupid, but I admired these mergansers a great deal from afar. They were diving underwater and kept popping up in surprising places. Fun!

I also saw this diva—or rather, what remains of her. Now that spring is officially here, I am counting down the days until horseshoe crab season comes and my brain will be fixed.

I also came upon a fun mystery: this aggregation of broken shells around this rock. Why are the shells all here, and broken? Did they aggregate here because of the tide, or was someone eating them? Who was eating them! Show yourselves! If anyone has any leads in mind, please pass them along.

Anyway back to the creature of the moment: Pepper! As you may have guessed from my beautiful high-resolution photo, Pepper does not live in Marine Park proper with the other diamondback terrapins, the only brackish-water turtle species in North America. Instead, Pepper lives inside the nature center at Marine Park in a tank. Pepper was born in the wild in 2005 but then taken as a pet by someone who didn’t know how to take care of a terrapin, according to the label on Pepper’s tank. The label also informed me that Pepper can eat fish, crustaceans, marine worms, mollusks, and some insects, but Pepper’s favorite food is brown pellets. I resonated with Pepper deeply then, as someone who can eat cruciferous greens and antioxidant-rich berries but often decides to eat half a bag of Trader Joe’s Baked Cheese Crunchies. I love my orange pellets!

Anyway, if you’re ever awash in dread or melancholy or rage or wrath or any of those emotions that are becoming more and more familiar, I highly recommend hightailing it to Marine Park and saying hello to Pepper. Maybe you’ll even get to see Pepper popping a pellet or two.
