bat 2 the future

First off I’d like to apologize for titling an earlier edition of this newsletter “it’s bat time, babes” without actually having any bat updates to share. I did so intending to alert people to upcoming bat-related events. But this time, I have come prepared with a bat update of my own. I have sought, and seen, the bats. It’s bat time for real now, babes!

The silhouette of the gate at Green-Wood Cemetery

This Monday, my friend Kate and I went to a really lovely bat walk in Green-Wood Cemetery, hosted by the Urban Bat Project NYC and Queer Birders. Green-Wood Cemetery is one of my favorite green spaces in the city, and I’d never gone there after dark before. We all gathered by the giant gothic gates as the wildlife biologist Nic Comparato talked about the bats that make their home in NYC. Some species, like eastern red bats, migrate here each year. Others, like big brown bats, live here year-round. Then we set off to one of the cemetery’s reflecting pools, where we lay down blankets and waited for the bats to emerge.

This is when Kate and I realized that this was kind of a perfect date night — blankets, bats, a throng of kind creature-oriented queer people whose faces we could barely make out in the moonless night. It was very cute! I recommend this event (whenever it is held again) to anyone who hoping to plan a sweet and slightly spooky date.

We saw the bats pretty immediately, swooping erratically over us in search of bugs. A silver lining of NYC’s light pollution is that the skies are never truly dark, which makes it easier to see the little silhouettes zigging and zagging across the sky. Each time we saw a bat, we said, “Bat!” and pointed, despite the fact that, again, it was night, and no one could really see where we were pointing.

Later on, Kate and I decided to wander around the pool and cemetery which was initially very peaceful and atmospheric. Then we wandered down a less-illuminated path and saw a dark figure in the distance that was too blobbish to be a gravestone and too small to be human. I am a ghost-curious person, but I was not prepared to make contact that night. We decided to turn around. But our moods were soon lifted when we came upon someone photographing a skeletal sort of plant, and when we approached, we learned there was a beautiful praying mantis perched on said plant! She was slaying!

As we wrapped up, the folks organizing the event held up their batons (ha!), which are essentially bat detectors that allow you to hear the echolocating calls of the bats. It’s really special to hear the bats, how their calls quicken and flare as they swoop near you or seize an insect mid-flight. I have no photos of the bats, but I will treasure my memories of them.

We’ve got a beautiful month of events coming up in September, which marks the beginning of fall migration! Fall is one of the two best times of year to bird in the city, so I encourage you to join a walk or two and revel in the very hot and elusive birds that will be passing through the city soon. There are also a handful of tree counts at a park near you, some fungi walks and more events in Green-Wood Cemetery, plus a queer history tour of Central Park’s beloved birding spot, the Ramble. As always, if you make it out to an event and have a good time, I’d love to hear about it! Enjoy the last gasps of summer, and I’ll see you in a month.
