Show Up Toronto - October 1, 2026
Hi friends and neighbours,
If you’re joining the newsletter for the first time after the talk I gave about tech billionaires for The Walrus last week, welcome! For anyone who couldn’t make it, my segment was about 9 minutes of Solidarity Forever-ing and if you enjoy these newsletter intros you’ll probably get a kick out of it. The whole panel is really worth watching - all the speakers were great and I learned a lot.
It’s October, which means we are less than four weeks away from municipal elections on October 26th. You can also advance vote from October 6th-11th - make sure you check the City of Toronto’s voter information guides. October 1st is when candidates in Toronto are allowed to put up lawn signs, so expect to see lots of names popping up near you.
If you haven’t been following things in your ward too closely, fret not: The Local has a pretty comprehensive ward-by-ward candidate tracker with bios, City Hall Watcher’s candidate tracker is more procedural but has crucical endorsement info, and The Green Line has a great guide for how to go about vetting a candidate. In general, if you care about Toronto city politics, I cannot recommend City Hall Watcher highly enough. The School of Cities has also released a cool interactive tool mapping mayoral votes with various neighbourhood characteristics. For example, % car commuters who voted for Rob Ford. I could sigh exasperatedly at this graph for hours.
Our calendar has tons of election-oriented events in the next few weeks, but I’ve also made an editorial decision not to post ward-specific events. This is mainly because there are so many of them it would overwhelm the calendar, but also because I don’t want to accidentally omit wards we happen to be less plugged into, or platform the events of candidates whose values don’t align with the Show Up Toronto mission. I’d urge you to research the candidates in your ward, go to a meet-and-greet, and put The Green Line’s guide to good use.
That said, it’s worth restating that the best way to think about voting is that it’s about choosing your adversary. No matter how great the politician may be personally, they are still beholden to power structures and systemic forces that inexorably push them towards reinforcing the status quo, and we in turn must push them to do better and hold them accountable when they inevitably fall short. Our job as the electorate doesn’t end on election day, that’s just when we get to shape the battlefield a little bit.
Thanks for showing up,
Jenny
