Show Up Toronto - May 28, 2026
Hi friends and neighbours,
Eid Mubarak! Thousands of community and social services workers across Ontario are on strike right now, protesting chronic underfunding of social services. This is a labour story and it is also a health care story, which means of course it is also a privatization story and a provincial politics story. It's related to the defunding of education, especially for special ed support, the erosion of renter protection, the defunding of safe consumption sites, the way the city is treating the unhoused population ahead of FIFA.
Sometimes the interconnectedness of all these fights can feel overwhelming, a hydra that grows new ways to make our collective experiences worse every time you look. Another way to think about it is that there are so many ways to make a difference and so many sites of change. If you care about labour, there are so many things happening right now - the Mayworks festival, a Tech Workers’ Coalition social tomorrow, the launch of a new Toronto chapter of a young workers collective this weekend, an Injured Worker rally next week, plus the NDP has tabled a bill to strengthen the right to strike by repealing section 107. If you care about health care, the Ontario Health Coalition is at Queen's Park right now organizing against privatization. If you want to support education workers, the Fund Our Schools campaign is running a town hall next week. If you want to support these support workers, Spring is hosting a phone zap up to support striking OPSEU members tomorrow and the Sistering team also is inviting everyone to join them for a picket line party tomorrow. If you're just mad at the Ford government in general, and who isn't these days, there's another instance of the Protest Doug Ford rallies this Saturday at Queen's Park.
A thing that can sometimes get lost is that each of these visible actions is the tip of an iceberg of care work. The social services strike, coordinating labour action across 27 sites in Ontario, was over a year in the making. The point of these visible demonstrations is to show the size of our collective anger to the ruling class, yes, but it's also about showing the size of our collective care to one another, and to provide entryways for those of us who feel alone in our rage and helplessness to get involved. No matter your lane, there will be someone else in it with you. We just have to pick one and show up, and trust that others will, too.
