Show Up Toronto - April 9, 2026
Hi friends and neighbours,
Next Monday there are two federal byelections in Toronto - one in University-Rosedale to replace Chrystia Freeland, and another in Scarborough Southwest to replace Bill Blair. These two byelections—along with a third one in the Terrebone riding in Montreal—could potentially give the Carney administration a majority government, an outcome that seems increasingly likely with the defection of formerly conservative MP Marilyn Gladu earlier this week. Gladu is most known for voting against banning conversion therapy, advocating for using hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID, supporting the trucker convoy in Ottawa, being in favour of restricting abortion, and saying the military should be sent in to deal with Indigenous protestors. With friends like these, etc.
I hear a lot of reasonable, kind people speak approvingly of Carney because he's very good at acting like a statesman. People are sincerely grateful that he doesn't openly cheer the deaths of his political opponents because the norms of acceptable behaviour have shifted so much and we have forgotten that we used to expect more of our leaders. The fact that Canada barely batted an eye at the American President vowing to do a genocide on Tuesday and even now refuses to consider sanctions on Israel for the ongoing slaughter of civilians in Lebanon is ample evidence that we no moral high ground to claim. But still, most people look approvingly to the central banker actively doing the opposite of what he campaigned on and pulling our formerly centrist institutions even further to the right, comforted by the fact that he sounds polite while doing so.
I spent most of Tuesday anxiously toggling between news sources and my day job, trying to forget about nuclear war for forty-five minutes at a time so I could do my little software tasks. And then I log off from the screen that earns me money and I log onto the screen that I torture myself with for free and I read about TDSB job cuts and Alberta separatism and supervised consumption sites closing across the country. Our reality feels insane.
And yet. As my friend Winston points out, times of rupture are also opportunities for change and for expanding our political imaginations. He got to see this first-hand in Minneapolis, but I think I'm starting to see it elsewhere, too. The nightmares expand their grasp everyday, but it also feels like we are dreaming bigger, scheming further. Avi Lewis winning the federal NDP leadership race feels like part of this, even if he's not your favourite candidate. So does the founding convention of a Toronto city-wide tenant union next Saturday. So does the Off The Defensive Toronto General Assembly next Sunday. So does the ramp-up in Parents for Child Care canvassing, the relaunch of the Toronto chapter of the Council of Canadians, the sectoral organizing campaign in higher education. The fact that my email provider increasingly warns me about these emails being too long because there are just so many things to tell you about.
It feels absurd to remind you about the byelections on Monday when I've spent this week worrying about nuclear war. But voting was never meant to be the last thing in our political toolchest; it is, if anything, the first. Voting is less about choosing your hero and more about choosing your enemy. Who your enemy is matters a great deal! But we still have to organize before the vote, during the vote, and after the vote to take them on effectively.
Please vote on Monday, if you're in one of the ridings. If you know people who live in those ridings, please remind them to vote. And then find a group you can dream big with, and organize.
Thank you for showing up.
Jenny
