Show Up Toronto - April 2, 2026

Hi friends and neighbours,

Today I bring you two quick City of Toronto things:

  • Toronto City Council's Confronting Anti-Black Racism Committee passed a recommendation last week for a moratorium on evictions in Toronto Community Housing based on late rent. This recommendation takes into account the fact that between 2023 and 2025, evictions have increased by over 100%, and disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, and racialized tenants. The Economic and Community Development Committee meets on April 9th to discuss this proposal - use this email template to voice your support for an eviction moratorium!
  • The staff who work the City Council offices (for example, answering email and phone calls from angry constituents) voted to unionize in March of 2025 and the City has spent the past year fighting them in the courts over it. One way you can tell whether someone genuinely supports labour rights is how they react when their own team unionizes. The city staffers have started a letter writing campaign - email your city councilors and ask them to recognize the union.

On a lighter note, you can also vote on the name of the new ferries that go to Toronto island. I was disappointed to see a distinct lack of Ferry McFerryface but some of these aren't bad.

Thanks for showing up.

Jenny
