stine & glang
Tonight im going to play R L Stine at Late Night With Terry Wogan. I'm banking on no one knowing what R L Stine sounds like, so I'm not committed to doing any kind of consistent or accurate impression. Instead I'm trying to fill an A6 notebook with as many riffs on Goosebumps titles as I can conjure up. The Skeleton That Stole The Nuclear Codes and The Slime That Fucked Around is roughly the level that I'm operating at. There's no quality control, I'm going for sheer volume.
There's one fancy dress shop accessible to most fringe performers who are stuffed into every wardrobe and shoebox in a musty corona around Edinburgh old town. It's both absorbed into and legally distinct from Edinburgh Bargain Stores on Nicholson Street. An old shop full of bits. A place outside of time.

You have to ask the owner to be let in the fancy dress bit. He guides you through into the darkened adjoining shop, hits the switch, and watches with ambiguous levels of patience as you continually pick up and put down the same fez. Would R L Stine wear a fez? Yes. I've decided. Why not. I'm being stared down. R L Stine will wear the next four items I can find.
glang
im very excited for the glang show on the 30th. and by excited i always mean apprehensive. every glang show feels like im pushing my luck. they are both miracle and aberration. and while im regularly punished, i feel like some truly unsurvivable retribution is just around the corner. this year we've been attempting to create a subplot about the infant christ being born and kept safe from the childcatcher from chitty chitty bang bang. we've got a live score from mediterra music lab who play folk music from around the mediterranean who i believe are going to help create some truly ethereal moods.
frimg
i think i've had a nice month. ive been absolutely besieged by sinusitis for the last week after a routine week three illness laid some solid foundations in my nostrils. for a few days i could barely mount the volume necessary to argue with a precorded version of my own face.
it's been a good festival by most metrics. if you can reduce a month of art and creativity into numbers (you can) then the numbers tell a story of a brave man who received a modest reward for having a laugh. though i wonder if its helped me find a wider audience. many reviews have described me as a comedian's comedian whose audience is primarily other comics and hardcore comedy fans. i thought this was unfair, but over the month ive discovered the faces of the most effusive post-show handshakers on flyers and posters for their own comedy shows. many of the signups to this newsletter are email addresses like [email protected]. as the month have gone on more anonymous comments in the chat are comedy insider jokes. yesterday someone convinced me bruce dessau was in the room and it really threw me for a loop. people are learning how to wound me. if this show goes on another week i would be utterly destroyed.
ok thats it from me. maybe ill be in your inbox again next month when i emerge from the big sept slumb (september slumber). really i just wanted to provide a clean ticket link for the glang show. its almost tradition that people dont prebook for it and its just a deluge of waifs and wastrels on the night. it's not a show that attracts the diligent.
