School of Block: Newsletter, January 16th
Hi everyone,
Welcome back to another week in School of Block! To start off this issue, we want to give a shout out to a local company (Midwest, USA) that just received funding to build their cloud-based, smart-contract-as-a-service platform, Simbachain! It is being built to address security threats from hackers and bad actors as well as provide a convenient API to deploy blockchain applications from. Read more about it here. Thanks to Notre Dame University for supporting this project and the continued development of blockchain technologies!
Here are some more interesting developments:
-
More news from the US: Illinois is yet another state that has passed a law to recognize blockchain contracts as legally binding. They are now considered “a viable alternative to paper-based records.”
-
Large companies are investing in making their permissioned blockchains interoperable with public blockchains. A start up offshoot of JPMorgan just launched a public blockchain, Kadena, with smart contracts that are interoperable between their public and private chains. Their system is set up to combine the benefits of public blockchains along with the speed of private blockchains. Kedena’s wallet also works with Cosmos, a leader in the interoperability space.

Today, our internet is a walled garden; it’s difficult to share things across platforms and control the content that we create and publish. The it’s akin to a network of silos that are connected by search engines. The Open Index Protocol aims to solve these problems and help content creators publish, index, and control their works. “Open Index Protocol (OIP) is an open source specification for a persistent worldwide index and file library useful for data publishing, file distribution and facilitating direct payments.” Find out more by watching this video by the creator.
