Ćevapi / Ćevapčići

Deliciously simple, perfect for parties, street food, or just grilling in your backyard

hand lettered title that reads "I Think You're Sauceome" with a cartoon drawing of a peapod

Do you need a new summer obsession? Get yourself some hot grilled ćevapčići!

Ćevapi/ ćevapčići

Typically made from ground beef (and sometimes lamb and pork as well), minced garlic and onions, seasoned with salt, pepper and paprika - and often a little bit of baking soda to help tenderize the meat

They can be grilled, broiled, or pan-fried

Introduced to the Balkans during the Ottoman empire, when the region was under Turkish rule

‘Cevap’ derives from the Persian ‘Kebab’

Often served with sliced onions, ajvar (a red pepper spread), kajmak (a creamy clotted cream) and flat bread

A popular balkan dish, Considered by some to be the national dish of Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina!

A common food at parties and festivals and a popular street food too

I first became aware of this delicious Balkan street food many years ago when this eye catching food stall started popping up at seemingly every summer festival in Chicago. The hand-formed sausages at their stall smelled amazing and tasted even better.

Phill Vucinic & Joe Alfirevich of Novi Most/Cevapcici Chicago have been spreading the good news of these delicious Balkan treats for over 20 years at this point. The formula is simple, but they’re so ridiculously satisfying. If you’re not able to stumble across a stall at a street festival, the recipes are usually simple enough to make at home. Or, if you’re in Chicagoland, the guys at Novi Most sell packaged ćevapčići to a good handful of groceries around town, including Agora Market!

I was reminded of ćevapčići recently when Niles and I ended up in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood a little while back, at a little tavern called Lockal. They’ll put cevapi on a pizza for you, and serve it with a shot of rakija too! Highly recommend. ^_^

What I’m Into Lately:

I’ve been playing Dragon Quest VII Reimagined! I love a JRPG, and I really enjoyed Dragon Quest XI a few years ago (miss you, Sylvando!). I’d been eyeing this remake for a while, and when all the Dragon Quest games recently went on sale, I pulled the trigger. No regrets so far! (The sale goes for a few more days, too, if you’re tempted!)

What Toki’s Into Lately:

Just sitting around being perfectly handsome, blissfully unaware that I’m going to fly to Toronto in a few days.

a fluffy orange and white cat looking confidently at the viewer
This will be my lap to sit on, uninterrupted, forever
