Autumn reset 🎃
Good morning. Happy Sunday.
A few days ago I rearranged the downstairs living / art space.
Before, I wasn’t making art there because it was cluttered and inaccessible. Now, it’s much easier to sit down and start making. Bonus: the TV / record listening space is now a lot more cozy.
I changed my environment to fit my goals. It’s simple. And it’s an incredibly effective way to start building new habits.
October has arrived. There are three months left in the year. This week, what can you change in your environment to make it easier to accomplish your goals?
Some ideas:
-
Place your running / gym shoes near the door.
-
Place your paints and brushes out on the counter along with some scrap paper as a reminder to start that new painting.
-
Set a reminder to watch the online course you’ve bookmarked. Add the link to your to-do list.
-
Set an alarm every day at 4:00 PM (or whatever time works for you) as a hard stop to your work day. Take a walk around the block. A little bit of movement works wonders.
-
Roll out your yoga mat as a reminder to stretch before bed.
-
If you have smart lights, set them to dim automatically when you should start getting ready for bed.
-
Charge your e-reading device and place it next to your bed, don’t forget a glass of water.
-
Pick your outfit for the next day and set it out the night before.
-
Place a candle and matches near your workspace to create a cozy atmosphere while you work.
-
Declutter a small space. The spice rack. A drawer. Invite new energy by tossing out the old.
I highly recommend a good autumn cleaning and organizing. If you’re not sure where to start, I wrote an in-depth guide.

Thinking about unbundling myself from my job and how doing this has really improved my outlook on life:
One interesting exercise is to unbundle everything you might get (or want) from a full-time job (purpose, camaraderie, structure, learning, status, cash flow, equity, etc) and consider how you might arrange your life to find them elsewhere.
