Good morning good morning. Running late again as always in the summer. I guess this is “vacation” for me: my daughter lets me sleep a little bit longer before I jump on meetings. Revenue meeting today. Slow ad summer angst. Maybe I’ll write a post-rock song called “Slow Ad Summer Angst.”

We had Spaghetti night last night — a tradition here in our Somerville apartment. Invite a bunch of friends over and make a lot of spaghetti. Get excited about spaghetti. Only Emma substituted thin linguini for spaghetti. I am still not sure if it is a betrayal or genius. Jussi made a Watergate Salad. There was garlic bread and pesto bread. There were fine wines.

There was a viewing of Backrooms after dinner. Had not seen it yet. It was… good? Ish? Little long, little bit “puzzle box” for me. But man Chiwetel Ejiofor is a very good actor. Building the sets must have been very fun. I am pissed about the girl from Shrinking.

Todd Blanche is gonna get confirmed and I am ripshit fuck that shit. So now it falls to Murkowski and Collins, since Tillis and Cornryn folded, those turds. I am not optimistic. Hopefully at least they fail to do it before they go on summer recess and that gives reporters five more weeks to dig up more dirt on the dude.

We’re listening this morning to a lovely dreampop shoegaze band called sundayclub (sic). Recommendation from old friend and GMHHAY Slack member Keith. It is awesome. More shoegaze the world needs more shoegaze. Take the world over, start charting. We need breathless WSJ trend pieces about Shoegaze. Should I capitalize “shoegaze?” I think no, right? Genres are not capitalized? Anyway, not as hard as the new blackgaze stuff, woman singer, straight vocals, maybe a bit first Slowdive album maybe a bit Swallow. Good stuff. I like it. Thank you, Keith.

I want you to know I already failed at not buying records this week. My god the assault this morning in the email was brutal. New Yoko Ono reissues, new Mono reissues, new Mountain Goats reissues, Butthole Surfers reissues: all cheaper than the older pressings on Discogs. A new Kraky release with an advance track that sounded amazing. I confined myself to two records. It could have been worse.

The insurance company finally paid me for the gate damage a clinic patient did over at Chore House, so I booked the gate company to come repair the gate. Five week wait time. Five more weeks of the deer eating my plants. Which means I am fucked for fall planting season, aside from the greenhouse. This is very sad. I am sad. I like gardening.

Update on my Ai disclosure stuff. It seems that the EU has passed a law saying everyone has to tell whether or not Ai was involved in the content they are delivering. The I’m-so-smart-I’ve-seen-it-all-before Silicon Valley types think this will lead to disclosure fatigue, since so many people ignore and hate the data use disclosures that litter the web now. I predict (with a, say, 70-30 confidence level) this will be different. There are a lot of people outraged about data privacy on the web, sure, but that number is dwarfed right now by the number of people outraged about AI. It is very rare I see a cookies dialogue and get upset and leave. It happens, but it doesn’t happen much. But I will do everything in my power to avoid LLM/GPT Ais, and I will deeply appreciate these disclosures.

Also my friend Patty said she has been styling it “Ai,” lowercase I, as a small act of resistance, and I am here for it and will do so here from here on out. It may take me a while to transition. Be patient with me. But we will now update the GMHHAY style guide accordingly.

Oh my god I need a GMHHAy style guide. I am still heavily influences by the old Wired style guide book that was just great.

Come to think of it that book could use a new edition.

Bending Spoons — the excellently named collector of aging internet properties of whom I am desperately jealous even though they do not run the properties the way I would — acquired Airtable. Which is crazy. Airtable is so ubiquitous and I struggle to think of another SaaS product, perhaps Slack aside, that integrated itself into so many workflows so quickly. I wonder if you could make a chart of time-of-founding to time-of-acquisition-by-Bending-Spoons enumerated in number of days. I wonder if this is the fastest time for that. It would be cool if someone could make that chart and it would be even cooler if they made it without AI, taking the, eh, hour or so to do it, but who would do that and thats what AI is for Rick but Rick the AI might not be correct and also it would be immoral you’re talking like “it would be cool to own a Porsche so just steal it” cmon man ethics matter, etc., etc.

Also it would not be cool to own a Porsche. I lied.

Jane had a lovely time at Spaghetti Night and she was great at bedtime because she had an audience and she was very good this morning. She and Emma are off to the beach today with Abby (and Emily too? Not sure actually) while I stay at home and toil away in the internet slave mines. It is sad. Jane and I showed the guests her SOUTH KOREA IS OVER video, the one she watches all the time. The guests took it with much more dismay than Jane did.

She woke me up nice and late and we had a lovely snuggle and I made her breakfast and we had Good Jane for a day or so there and it was lovely.
