PinkLetter - Reach out and help others

PinkLetter (odone.io)

Welcome to my PinkLetter. A short, weekly, technology-agnostic, and pink newsletter where we cultivate timeless skills about web development.

My Ramblings This Week

Whom did you help this week?

You know, I always used the internet to talk about myself and my craft. Not only it didn’t get much traction, but it also drained the hell out of me.

Unfortunately (for you), I haven’t stopped bragging. However, I started making friends online. Or as my design mentor would say, I re-discovered the internet from 2001 when forums and chats were the thing.

I love it—and I bet you would too:

Tweet of mine that says: "Any time you see something interesting on the internet, send a message to the author. Folded hands You'd be amazed of what happens afterwards."

Just this week, I talked to:

  • a Clinic Success Manager about their welcome email drip;
  • a Software Leader based in Vienna about product development;
  • a Badass Entrepreneur about applying math to improve insulin dosing.

Trust me, I could go on and on.

Give it a try next week: reach out to people, say thanks and genuinely try to help.

The Diabetic Corner

This week, I screwed up my blood sugars:

I’m supposed to be good at this shit, still I fucked it up.

I felt it was important to share this struggle in a time where people only share their rich lives on the internet.

Elsewhere on the Web

Do Things that Don’t Scale by Paul Graham

One of the most common types of advice we give at Y Combinator is to do things that don’t scale.

Index Advisor for Postgres by pganalyze

The pganalyze Index Advisor analyzes your query, determines how Postgres will scan the tables involved, and may suggest indexes to make those scans more efficient.

Sociotechnical Lenses into Software Systems by Paul Osman

The systems we are building and operating are constantly being modified by different people, with different contexts, at different times, who may or may not speak to each other directly. This emergent collaboration can present unique challenges that are fun to navigate.
